Kangana said that Savarkar is “far above the Bharat Ratna”, meaning she believes his place in history is greater than any award. Yet, she added that if he receives the honour, it would be a matter of pride for every Indian.

The controversy started when Mohan Bhagwat, during an event marking the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s centenary in Mumbai, spoke about Savarkar’s legacy and the question of giving him the Bharat Ratna. Bhagwat said the award’s prestige would actually increase if Savarkar was conferred it, and that many Indians already admire him deeply. He also noted he is not part of the committee that decides on Bharat Ratna recipients, but would raise the matter with them.
Bhagwat’s remarks have sparked a heated political debate. While supporters like Kangana and some social organisations welcomed the idea, leaders from other parties questioned Savarkar’s historical record and merit for the award. Critics have pointed to controversies related to his actions during the freedom struggle and alleged ideological positions. It will be interesting to see if more Bollywood celebrities will speak about the matter, because Kangana has started the conversation. Let's wait and watch.
