Kajol's latest release Maa, a horror drama, had a steady start at the Indian box office with an average to decent performance over its opening weekend. The film, which was released on a good number of screens across the country, saw a gradual rise in collections through the weekend but remained within modest limits. The biggest reason for this was the competition from Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par and F1 The Movie as both films outperformed this new horror universe movie.

The film opened on Friday with ₹4.75 crore nett, followed by better numbers on Saturday with ₹6 crore nett. Sunday saw a slight improvement, collecting ₹6.75 crore nett. This brings the total weekend collection of Maa to approximately ₹17.50 crore nett. The Sunday jump was missing and therefore the film has to perform better on weekdays but the current trend suggest otherwise. Yet, the film can reach a respectable total, it not a HIT numbers.

Total – ₹17.50 crore nett approx.

While the film hasn’t exactly set the box office on fire, the numbers are fair considering it is a horror film, a genre that often sees mixed responses from the Indian audience. Kajol’s strong performance and the emotional angle in the storyline have been appreciated by a section of viewers, helping draw decent footfall over the weekend. Yet, the numbers look low because the weekdays drop will be higher.
