Shomu Mukherjee, husband to veteran actress Tanuja and father of Kajol and Tanisha, passed away at 8.30 am this morning in Mumbai. Besides his wife and daughters, Shomu Mukherjee is survived by his brothers, Joy and Deb Mukherjee.
Shomu Mukherjee was the son of the famous Sasadhar Mukherjee, who founded Filmistan. Shomu did not follow in the footsteps of his brothers, Joy and Debu, and take up an acting career. Instead, he went on to write, direct and produce films like Chhalia Babu, Ek Baar Mukura Do, Fifty Fifty, Sangdil Sanam, Pathar Ke Insaan Lover Boy and Nanha Shikhari among others. He met Tanuja on the sets of Ek Baar Muskura Do (1972). After a whirlwind romance, the duo got married in 1973 and went on to have two daughters, Kajol and Tanisha. But their marriage was believed to be quite stormy and the two separated after some years. He was understandably very proud of his daughter, Kajol, when she made her filmi debut.
