Actor-director Joy Mukherjee, who had been admitted to the Lilavati hospital due to his ailing health and was on a ventilator, passed away today on Friday (March 9, 2012) at the age of 73.
Born on February 24, 1939, Joy Mukherjee had debuted opposite Sadhana with the 1960 film Love In Simla and had worked in hit films like Shagird, Love In Tokyo, Bahu Beti, Ziddi, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, Ek Musafir Ek Hasina, Puraskar, Ishara, Hum Hindustani and Chailla Babu, to name a few.
Though Joy did produce and direct Humsaya, the movie did not do well and neither did the other films he directed and produced. In 2009, he acted in the television serial Aye Dil-E-Nadan.
Hailing from a film family, Joy was the son of Sadashar Mukherjee, who was married to Ashok Kumar's sister Sati and also the co-founder of Filmalaya Studios. Mukherjee was also the paternal uncle of actress Kajol.
