Javed Akhtar Refused To Work In Border 2?
Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has revealed why he chose not to be associated with the upcoming film Border 2, and his reason has sparked a wider debate about creativity in contemporary Hindi cinema. Speaking candidly to India Today, Akhtar confirmed that he was approached to write for the sequel but decided to turn down the offer due to what he described as a growing dependence on nostalgia.
“They did ask me to write for the film, but I refused. I really feel this is a kind of intellectual and creative bankruptcy,” Akhtar said. He criticised the trend of reusing or remixing old, successful songs instead of creating original music. According to him, adding new elements to previously popular tracks does not qualify as genuine creativity. “You have an old song that did well, and you want to put it out again by adding something? Make new songs, or else accept that you cannot do the same level of work,” he added.

Akhtar further questioned the need to recreate classic songs when filmmakers have the opportunity to start afresh. “Whatever is bygone, let that be. What is the need to recreate it?” he asked, stressing that relying on the past reflects an acceptance of creative limitations rather than ambition.
To underline his point, Akhtar cited the example of Haqeeqat (1964), a film that preceded Border (1997) and featured iconic patriotic songs like Kar Chale Hum Fida and Main Yeh Sochkar Uske Dar Se Utha Tha. Despite their immense popularity, the makers of Border did not reuse those songs. “We wrote new ones and made completely different songs, and people liked them too,” he explained.
Akhtar concluded by urging filmmakers to trust their creative instincts instead of living off past glory. His remarks have resonated strongly, especially at a time when remakes and recreations dominate Bollywood’s music landscape. Do you agree with the legend? Let us know in comments.
