Shoojit Sircar Interview:

Shoojit Sircar is unarguably one of the best Indian filmmakers of this era. With numerous Filmfare and National Awards, the veteran director has made some amazing movies. During an exclusive interview at the Indian Film Festival Of Melbourne (IFFM) in Australia, Shoojit spoke about some of his best movies alongside some of the actors he has worked with. He drew light on his film Sardar Udham, and spoke very highly about Vicky Kaushal.

“Well, Sardar Udham is a very important subject. Not only for me, but also for all of us. There are many unsung heroes from our independence movement that we’re a little unaware about....And what they have done to fight the colonialism, the kind of inspirations, whether it’s Bhagat Singh or Sardar Udham, that I’ve tried to show in the film. So Vicky Kaushal is a boy from Amritsar. So there’s a lot of Punjabi blood in him. So for him to really perform Udham was a little bit more easier I would say because of the stories and folktales of Sardar Udham that we’ve heard, but when he actually was in Udham’s shoes, you saw what you saw.....What a person goes through.....Who must’ve seen such a massacre in such scale. So I think it was just brilliant how Vicky played a 19-year-old and then a 40-year-old, that travel, that time travel! So for me it’s undoubtedly one of Vicky’s bravest performance,” said Shoojit Sircar.

When asked to speak about Varun Dhawan and John Abraham’s acting potential, Shoojit stated that both of them have it in them to act well. He defended them, and felt that the two did a brilliant job in October and Madras Cafe respectively (which were both directed by him itself). Despite often being criticized for their acting, Shoojit spoke about how it was all Varun and John’s efforts in their respective films.

“I think John Abraham and Varun Dhawan have it in them as an actor. I mean if they didn’t have it in them then they wouldn’t have been able to perform. What you see on screen is absolutely their experience, so that’s what an actor does. A director can just guide them through, but whatever the excellence in their performance that you’re talking about, I think the entire credit just goes purely to both of them, to Varun Dhawan and John Abraham,” he said.

Shoojit then drew light on John Abraham and praised his off-screen personality. “I think my involvement with John Abraham has always been very very good, and specially with the films we’ve been involved in. He did one of my initial films, Vicky Donor. So I’ve always been thankful. Also, he was part of Madras Cafe, he did Madras Cafe and we were supposed to do many other films, and I hope in future we will do it.....But I think an association with him was absolutely wonderful,” Shoojit continued.

It is to be noted that Shoojit’s most recent film was “I Want To Talk” which received a lot of appreciation from the critics. It featured Abhishek Bachchan as the lead character. Shoojit has also worked on a lot of films with Abhishek’s father Amitabh Bachchan. Thus, he also acknowledged Amitabh’s contributions in further enhancing his reputation as a filmmaker.

“I think we’ve spoken about Mr. Amitabh Bachchan in many interviews and everybody knows about it, I mean there’s nothing new that he’s one of the most punctual and hardworking actors. I’ve been really fortunate and privileged that he has agreed to work in my films. So whatever I am in the film industry, there’s a lot I owe it to him.....Because of him I’ve got a lot of attention in my films also.....And my standing in the industry as a filmmaker, I owe it to him!,” Shoojit concluded.
