Bollywood's Sanju Baba, aka Sanjay Dutt, celebrates his 66th birthday today. On this occasion, it’s worth looking back not just at his cinematic journey, but at how he emerged from one of the darkest chapters of his life—his alleged involvement in the 1993 Bombay blasts case. Once labelled as Bollywood’s ‘bad boy’, Dutt’s story has since evolved into one of resilience and redemption. Here's a brief look at it.

In 1993, Sanjay Dutt was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) for possession of illegal arms reportedly linked to the Mumbai bombings. His arrest shocked the nation. He spent 18 months in jail as an undertrial before being granted bail. For years, his career was overshadowed by court hearings and public scrutiny. Many reported that he took the help of Shivsena cheif Balasaheb Thackeray to get out of jail and the picture of him with late political leader had made waves all over since his father was in Congress—opposition party of Shivsena.

In 2006, he was convicted under the Arms Act, not for terrorism, but for illegal possession of weapons. He served a five-year sentence and was released in 2016. During this period, Dutt openly spoke about his mistakes, stating, “I am not a terrorist. I made an error in judgment. I paid the price for it.” The supreme court's judge declared him guilty for keeping the weapon, nit terrorism.

What makes Sanjay Dutt’s comeback remarkable is his transparency and acceptance of his past. Post-release, he returned with roles in Bhoomi, Prassthanam, and then made a blockbuster comeback with KGF: Chapter 2. Fans expect him to return as Munna Bhai once again, but there is no concrete update about the same.

His life was chronicled in the 2018 biopic Sanju, which showed the highs and lows of a man who lived many lives in one. The film starred Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role and was directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with whom Dutt had worked for Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai.
