Hansal Mehta criticizes Film Federation of India's decision as Laapataa Ladies is out of the Oscars Race

Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies was chosen as India's official entry for the Oscars by the Film Federation of India, and many questioned their decision at that time. It seems that the naysayers were right, as the film has failed to make it to the shortlist for the Oscars 2025. One of them is Bollywood filmmaker Hansal Mehta.

Mehta has expressed his anger on Twitter/X and criticized their poor choices for years. It's been more than 20 years since a film sent by India has made it to the Oscars' nominees. The Aligarh maker slammed the Federation for their wrong choices; have a look at his post below.

"Film Federation of India does it again! Their strike rate and selection of films year after year is impeccable," he wrote

As Sandhya Suri's Santosh successfully made it to the Oscars shortlist of best films in foreign language category from the UK, Mehta spoke about the kind of content Oscars juries select.

"I’m sure the academy always selects and awards some of the best in the business. This isn’t just about them or these films in particular but about an ecosystem at large - film festivals, international producers and a whole system that can take our stories wider. India isn’t only about colonialism, poverty, oppression and exploitation. Like America doesn’t have stories only about only about guns, racism and Trump.  #JustSaying," he shared on his social media handle.
