Dream Girl 2 Vs Dream Girl 1 Box Office: Ayushmann Khurrana and Ananya Panday's Dream Girl 2 is about to end its theatrical run in India. The film has emerged as a Hit in India, with earnings close to 100 crore nett in five weeks. However, it has failed to beat its predecessor by a good margin, which isn't pleasant news for makers.
Dream Girl 2 was postponed due to date issues from the Bakri Eid release and also because it wasn't in the mood to clash with any other biggie. Big films or moderate-budget films don't matter when the clash tends to eat up business in any case. Dream Girl got a solo release on August 25th, but it was damaged by earlier releases, Gadar 2 and OMG 2. It's a funny coincidence that August saw three sequels, and all three were box office hits. Well, Dream Girl 2 was the lowest, despite having bigger potential than OMG 2 (clash hampered it).
DG 2 also didn't provide the content it was supposed to deliver, as the comedy was much noisier and cheaper this time. Dream Girl 1 had Ayushmann playing a man with the voice of a woman, which provides a soft security to the character's exposure. But in the sequel, we saw him playing a woman with annoying prosthetics. Nevertheless, the brand value of Dream Girl carried it ahead, with damage to its own standard.
DreamGirl 2 is an underwhelming sequel, but more than it was underwhelming grosser. It will end up almost 40 crore behind its predecessor, which was a fresh film. What's the use of a sequel? The value of the original film is far from its range, even with higher ticket rates and box office expansion. Talking of footfalls, DG 2 has just edged past half of Dream Girl's footfalls. That means only half of your audience came to the cinema, and that too after creating brand value.
Gadar 2 did affect its business, but half of its audience? No. Gadar 2 was on fire on single screens, while this Raaj Shandilyaa comedy was fronted by multiplex audiences, so one can't even blame Gadar 2 fully. But DG 2 did bring good news for box office windows and proved that the comedy genre is still alive. All it needs is a good film, and unfortunately, DreamGirl 2 wasn't it.
