Legendary Bollywood director Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday, December 23, 2024. He was seen celebrating his birthday last Saturday with many Bollywood celebrities, so this news has come as a big shock to everyone. We, at Movie Talkies, pray for his soul.

Shyam Benegal had kidney-related issues and died for the same reason. He was seen celebrating his 90th birthday on Saturday, December 14, 2024, with Bollywood actors Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Divya Dutta, Shabana Azmi, Rajit Kapur, Atul Tiwari, and others. Mourning his death, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur wrote: "He created 'the new wave' cinema. #ShyamBenegal will always be remembered as the man who changed the direction of Indian cinema with films like Ankur, Manthan, and countless others. He created stars out of great actors like Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. Farewell, my friend and guide."

Benegal made films like Ankur (1973), Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), and Bhumika (1977) that changed Bollywood's mainstream filmmaking and took the industry towards new wave cinema. He won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi seven times, setting a new record in Hindi cinema. Shyam Benegal's wife's name is Nira Benegal, and they have a daughter, Pia Benegal, who worked as a costume designer for many movies.
