Denzil Smith On Portraying Nehru and Jinnah:

In a candid conversation on The Pooja Bhatt Show, actor Denzil Smith opened up about the unique challenges of portraying two iconic historical figures—Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

"Christopher Nolan is intense & highly secretive," says Denzil Smith in The Pooja Bhatt Show –

Smith revealed that while preparing for Nehru, he had access to “hours upon hours” of archival footage, speeches, and recordings, which helped him study the former Indian Prime Minister’s mannerisms, voice, and personality in depth. “It’s a treasure trove for an actor,” he said, describing the extensive research process that went into bringing Nehru to life on screen.

In contrast, Smith noted that resources on Jinnah were limited. The scarcity of archival material meant he had to rely more on interpretation and imagination. He also pointed out the complex perception of Jinnah in India. “Jinnah has been broadly demonised in India as the man responsible for the Partition,” Smith observed. This, he explained, made the character “a more interesting person to play” because it allowed him to explore a multifaceted personality beyond public perception.

Reflecting on the experience, Smith emphasized the responsibility of portraying historical figures with authenticity and sensitivity. His approach highlights the careful balance actors must maintain between staying true to documented history and bringing their own insight and interpretation to complex personalities.
