Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her husband, businessman Raj Kundra, have been hit with a serious legal development as the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has added a charge of cheating under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code in an ongoing ₹60-crore fraud case.

The new charge follows the collection of witness statements and electronic evidence during the investigation, prompting authorities to escalate the allegations. The case stems from a complaint that the couple allegedly cheated a Mumbai-based businessman of more than ₹60 crore in what was described as a loan-cum-investment deal linked to their business interests.

Section 420 IPC, which deals with cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, is considered a scheduled offence under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), increasing the likelihood of further action by enforcement agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate.

The investigation is still underway, with the EOW continuing to examine financial transactions and explore how investor funds were used. Mumbai Police have already registered an FIR in the matter, and this latest development marks a significant escalation in the probe. We are waiting for an official word from the team.

Earlier this month, the Bombay High Court reportedly directed the couple to deposit ₹60 crore or provide an equivalent bank guarantee if they wished to have the ongoing Look Out Circular (LOC) against them suspended, highlighting the legal complications they face as the matter progresses. The addition of IPC Section 420 underscores the gravity of the allegations in one of the most high-profile financial fraud cases involving personalities from the entertainment industry. Raj Kundra has often tweeted about being innocent and that he will prove it to the world, but the case is only getting trickier for him and his wife.
