Akshay Kumar’s upcoming horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla has an interesting backstory. According to sources, the film’s script was originally written as a sequel to the 2007 hit Bhool Bhulaiyaa, which starred Akshay and Vidya Balan, Shiney Ahuja and was directed by Priyadarshan.

The original draft for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was penned by Priyadarshan, who believed that the franchise should continue with Akshay in the lead. A source told Mid-Day that Priyadarshan was confident in his story and felt it was a good fit for the next part of the series.

However, that plan didn’t materialise at the time. The sequel rights later moved forward under T-Series, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was eventually made with director Anees Bazmee and actor Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani in lead roles.

Years later, Akshay and Priyadarshan decided to reunite for a new project after 16 years, and the filmmaker reworked his old draft. This reworked version became the basis for Bhooth Bangla, giving the story a new identity and fresh direction while moving away from its original sequel concept.

Bhooth Bangla stars Akshay Kumar alongside actors like Tabu, Wamiqa Gabbi, Paresh Rawal, and the late Asrani. It marks the return of the actor-director duo’s collaboration after more than a decade.

Fans of the original Bhool Bhulaiyaa have been curious about Akshay’s return to the genre, especially since Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 became a separate project with a different team. Bhooth Bangla now carries that legacy forward with its own twist while still keeping the spirit of comedy and thrills that audiences enjoy. Will this live upto the expectations?
