James Cameron’s Avatar franchise has enjoyed massive popularity in India over the years, but the first-week comparison between Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar 2) and Avatar Fire and Ash, aka Avatar 3, paints a concerning picture for the brand. The numbers clearly indicate a significant drop in audience interest.

Avatar 2 had registered an impressive ₹185 crore in its first week in India. It quickly became one of the biggest Hollywood releases in the country and also the biggest Hollywood grosser in India.

On the other hand, Avatar 3 has managed to collect only ₹108 crore in its opening week. This marks a huge fall of nearly 40%, which cannot be ignored. While the film has decent visuals and scale, it has struggled to generate the same excitement at the ground level.

One major factor affecting Avatar 3’s performance is the box office cyclone created by Dhurandhar, which has dominated screens and audience attention across India. The strong hold and massive collections of the Hindi blockbuster have clearly impacted the Hollywood release, especially in mass circuits.

Another key issue has been poor marketing. Unlike Avatar 2, which enjoyed aggressive promotions and widespread awareness, Avatar 3 failed to build strong pre-release hype. The buzz remained limited, reducing urgency among moviegoers. The BMS sales hit 1 million interest months before its release but the footfalls didn't appear for the initial viewing cinemas.

Though Avatar 3 may still add numbers over the coming weeks, its first-week performance signals a clear slowdown for the franchise in India and highlights the growing challenge Hollywood films face against strong domestic content. The lifetime total will also lag behind the predecessor by a margin, which is nothing short of a defeat for the team in India.
