Veteran actor Arun Govil, best known for playing Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic Ramayan TV series, has finally responded to ongoing comparisons between the upcoming Nitesh Tiwari-directed Ramayana movie and the 2022 film Adipurush. Govil’s remarks come as the new cinematic adaptation — starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana and Sunny Deol as Hanuman — prepares for a big release later this year.

In a recent interview with PTI, Govil acknowledged that comparisons are natural when a beloved story is retold with a high profile cast. He said that when a “standard” has already been set by an earlier version, audiences will naturally talk about how new portrayals differ, but no one should feel upset by such comparisons.

Addressing direct comparisons with Adipurush — the mythological adaptation that was widely criticised and did not perform well at the box office — Govil said the two films are fundamentally different and should not be judged in the same way. He stressed that each project has its own vision and creative context, making direct parallels unfair.

Govil also praised Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Ram, calling him a “good actor and a good human being,” and emphasised that for roles of divine figures, the look and presence of the actor matter greatly so audiences can feel a connection to the character.

In Ramayana, Govil himself plays King Dasharatha, marking a return to the epic world but in a different avatar than the one that first brought him fame. Let's see how this film fares at the box office and in people's hearts.
