AR Murugadoss Blames Hindi Language Barrier for Failure:

Indian filmmaker AR Murugadoss has addressed why his collaboration with Salman Khan, Sikandar (released on Eid 2025), failed to connect with Hindi-speaking audiences, attributing much of the film’s underperformance to a language and cultural disconnect (Zoom TV).

Speaking to Tamil media outlet Cinema Vikatan, Murugadoss noted that making films in his mother tongue (Tamil) gives him creative strength, as he better understands cultural trends and youth sensibilities in that language. In contrast, working in Hindi felt like a handicap — he actually feels "handicapped" on set due to his limited understanding of the language. He explained that scripts are first written, then translated into English, and finally into Hindi — adding layers of distance from the original narrative voice (Filmfare).

Despite having previously delivered Hindi hits such as Ghajini and Holiday, Murugadoss said that with Sikandar, cultural nuance and linguistic fluency were missing: "We are not sure what the youngsters in North India like." He added, "It's like you don’t have hands," a vivid metaphor for how constrained he felt directing in an unfamiliar linguistic environment.

Sikandar

Sikandar, produced on an estimated ₹250-300 crore budget, was panned by critics and underperformed at the box office — grossing roughly ₹100 crore in India, significantly below expectations for a Salman Khan Eid release. Murugadoss, now promoting his upcoming Tamil project, stressed that his full creative potential emerges only when directing in his native language.
