Aanand L. Rai On Zero's Failure:

Aanand L. Rai has opened up about the reasons behind the underwhelming reception of Zero, starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, alongside Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif, admitting that he failed to fully account for the superstar’s larger-than-life image while making the film.

In an interview with Galatta, the filmmaker candidly reflected on his creative approach and where things may have gone wrong. “The problem with Zero was that, that man… that superstar came to me with so much of love and me being me, I never understood that it’s not an actor-director who was going to make a story,” Rai said. He explained that while he approached the project as a collaboration between an actor and a director, he overlooked the weight of Shah Rukh Khan’s stardom. “There was a superstar attached, his image is there, which I have to understand and get in the film. I was working with an actor, a big actor. I realised much later that there is an image that I had to take care of,” he added.

Rai further acknowledged that his filmmaking style often thrives without the expectations that come with star-driven cinema. “When you say that my films are without the baggage of a star, somewhere I agree that maybe I am unable to incorporate that stardom in my characters,” he admitted. According to him, audiences sometimes expect to see a reflection of the star within the character, alongside the narrative. “At times, people want to see their stars in a character, but a part of the star should also be there, which I was unable to do,” he said.

Summing up his experience, Rai described feeling creatively adrift during the process. “I was floating, those bearings were not there, they were moved,” he concluded, offering an honest introspection into one of the most discussed collaborations of his career.
