When it comes to Varun Dhawan, you expect chartbuster music. After all, the youngster has been working on back to back hardcore commercial 'masala' entertainers and that has time and again ensured popular music. However, October was always meant to be different, especially so since director Shoojit Sircar comes with his own sensibilities. Hence, you are reasonably prepared to check out what is in the offering.
'Theher Ja' is the opening number of the album and actually turns out be strictly okay. Even though Armaan Malik takes the lead as a singer, the overall feel of this number is just about okay as composer Abhishek Arora doesn't quite manage to bring on much of the zing factor that would have made this romantic number memorable. Abhiruchi Chand's lyrics are fine but not the kind that touch your heart.
The track that does touch your heart though is 'October Theme' but then this one is basically a musical piece by Shantanu Moitra with Rohan Roy playing the violin. Reminding one of the kind of music that found a place in parallel cinema of the late 70s and early 80s, this is a strictly situational piece that should go well with the film's storyline.
It has been a while since a number by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan made an impression and unfortunately 'Tab Bhi Tu' doesn't quite turn out to be an exception. As a matter of fact this one turns out to be a rather lazy piece by composer Anupam Roy and lyricist Tanveer Ghazi as neither of the two manages to create a kind of musical impression that would have made this sad romantic number stand out. Disappointing.
As for 'Manwaa', it is totally forgettable as you don't even recollect the tune after it has been heard once. The combination of Shantanu Moitra and lyricist Swanand Kirkire is anyways not really known for creating the kind of music that penetrates much into the commercial territory and this one is no different despite the fact that Sunidhi Chauhan has come behind the mike.
Same is the case with Monali Thakur rendered 'Chal' as well which tries to be retro in its treatment but just doesn't manage to get even in the third gear, leave aside managing to make an impression on full throttle. By the time this Shantanu Moitra composed and Tanveer Ghazi written number comes to a close, you are rather pleased that the soundtrack of October has come to a conclusion.
That by itself pretty much signifies that October has to stand out as one of the most disappointing soundtracks for a Varun Dhawan film.
