Close on the heels of the very successful Holiday, Akshay Kumar is back on the silver screen with Entertainment, his latest venture which stars the hot ‘n’ happening Tamannaah Bhatia opposite him. Directed by Sajid-Farhad, the film sees Akshay in full-on slapstick mode with a Dog for company! Music in a comedy film is more of a monotony breaker than anything else and therefore the talented composer duo of Sachin-Jigar will need to work doubly hard to ensure that their compositions make a mark above the din of hilarity and laughter. With Mayur Puri, Priya Panchal and Ashish Pandit sharing the lyrical credits, let us see what is in store for the listener.

Mika is in full form in the opening track, Veerey Di Wedding which is a typical Punjabi Wedding song with witty lyrics (Mayur Puri) that is sure to find favor with the youngsters. Sachin-Jigar’s composition is catchy especially the hook which should in effect justify the presence of a remix. The composers also need to be complemented for not following the typical bhangra style which is what one usually expects in such a song. As a matter of fact they have experimented by introducing a western flavor to it which makes the song quite disco-worthy. The Remix version is not much different and seems pointless to an extent.

Tera Naam Doon is a breezy romantic melody which is quite likeable and easy-on-the-ears. Atif Aslam is excellent in his rendition and reminds you of his Race ditties. Shalmali Kholgade provides good support to Atif and together they manage to impress the listener with a hummable melody. Sachin-Jigar’s composition is nothing extraordinary but will find middling popularity due to its simple yet hummable lyrics (Priya Panchal) and pleasant tune. The sad version of this track comes as Nahin Woh Saamne in the album and sees Atif giving a nice solo rendition. On the downside though it is too short to make an impact of any sort.

Trust our musicians to act on a bizarre idea of converting an evergreen nursery rhyme into a full on dance track and actually managing to impress us albeit unconventionally! Mayur Puri seems to have just let his imagination run wild with his wacky and hilarious lyrics yet still maintaining the rhythm in Johnny Johnny. Not just that, this musical tribute to the popular nursery rhyme Johnny Johnny also sees composer Jigar having super fun behind the mike with Madhav Krishna and Priya Panchal who together deliver these outrageously funny yet catchy lines that ironically enough turn out to be the highlight of this album! True to the film’s name, Johnny Johnny is pure entertainment for the listener and is a must listen!

The composers seem to have just run out of ideas for the last track of the album, Teri Mahima Aprampaar which sounds so outdated that it is frustrating to listen to the entire track. It also reinforces the fact that singer Udit Narayan is past his prime and therefore just does not impress. Anushka Manchanda gets very less singing time but still manages to hold fort.

Overall, the soundtrack of Entertainment is a mixed bag with a couple of good tracks interspersed with some very average ones. Sachin-Jigar are surely gifted composers and some of that is surely reflected in this soundtrack (case in point being Johnny Johnny). One does expect a little more consistency from them though.

Our Picks: Johnny Johnny, Tera Naam Doon
