Hichki Music Review: Listless And Pointless

Surprising, it is really surprising to hear the soundtrack of Hichki. Considering the fact that this one is a Yash Raj Films offering with Aditya Chopra making the film for wife Rani Mukerji, one would have expected at least some sort of semblance in the music of Hichki. However what one gets to hear is something really listless and pointless, courtesy composer Jasleen Royal who in the name of bringing something original delivers a soundtrack that just doesn't have anything memorable about it.
Jaideep Sahni is the lyricist of the title track 'Oye Hichki' which later also arrives as 'Soul of Hichki'. Rendered by Harshdeep Kaur, this one appears to be the kind of the number that may well have been composed in early 2000s. Though it tries to be peppy and funny, there is just no 'dum' in it to make you groove to it.
Comparatively better is 'Madamji Go Easy' which has Benny Dayal leading the charge with David Klyton joining in. A Tamil-Hindi-English mix track that could well have been straight out of a film from Chennai, it is written by Raj Shekhar and David Klyton. The only solace here is that the music has a bit of a catchy zing to it but that's about it.
Raj Shekhar is the sole lyricist for 'Khol De Par' and though there is Arijit Singh at the helm of affairs, this one too fails to register much of an impact. Yes, it tries to be inspirational and motivational for the central protagonist played by Rani Mukerji. However, other than possibly making an impact in the film's storytelling, there is no real purpose that the song solves.
Jasleen Royal brings herself behind the mike for 'Teri Dastaan' and the music here is somehow better. That said, this one too has the kind of sound that is typically associated with songs that Jasleen has sung in the past. Written by Neeraj Rajawat, it could do well with some of the poignant moments in the film, as also conveyed in the instrumental piece that comes later in the form of 'Naina's Theme'.
Neeraj Rajawat comes together with Aditya Sharma to write 'Phir Kya Hai Gham' which pretty much begins from where 'Teri Dastaan' left. Shilpa Rao, a talented singer who surprisingly sings a very few songs, is in her elements all over again but then the tune is so ordinary that it fails to leave any impact other than just holding on well while it is played.
An ordinary tune - well, this is something that can be said for most of the songs that Jasleen has come up with for Hichki, all of which would ensure that this one turns out to be a forgettable affair.
