Yet another super-hit that placed the crowning glory on Amitabh's crown. With Deewar, this tall, dark and handsome man consolidated his position in the film industry and came to be called the 'angry young man'.
The other actors in the film were Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi and Neetu Singh. Deewar had a mother but the mother of this film was no run-of-the-mill moms Hindi films generally show. The mother was the crux, the pivotal point of the story.
This widowed mother has two sons. One is a police officer, and the other a smuggler. The smuggler son is an intense man and has not forgiven the people who humiliated them years ago, when he was a child. He plays revenge on those grisly characters and chooses to do crime to give them back on the same coin.
He also wants to make up for the sufferings and losses his mother went through to bring him and his brother up and is in a hurry to buy her all the happiness of the world. Smuggling gives him quick money. But his mother doesn't know of her son's profession. It is only when her younger son discovers his brother's involvements does the mother come to know.
Deewar is a story of the good versus the bad. Shashi Kapoor is the good police officer and Amitabh Bachchan the bad smuggler. As it always happens in Hindi films, good wins in the end. But Amitabh's dramatic death on his mother's lap, in the end of the film won the audience. The message was clear. He was not bad, circumstances were.
