Mr. Prime Minister is Dev Anand?s experiment with a political film with himself in the title role. Dev Anand plays the role of the richest NRI in the world, who lives in London, but when he comes to Gujarat, becomes a victim of the earthquake. He loses his memory and continues living in Gujarat as hawker, selling newspapers. While doing his job he roams around passing comments on corrupt politicians. He contests for the Lok Sabha elections and even manages to win by a huge margin! But he is kidnapped and tortured by gangsters, where he manages to regain his memory! He goes to London, and comes back to give sermons to politicians!
There is novelty in the concept of the film, but the idea could not be turned into a good script. Performance-wise, Dev Anand pulls off the role as an NRI well, but is not convincing as the newspaper vendor. Boman Irani, Prem Chopra, Mohan Joshi, Anant Jog, Shahbaz Khan and Anjan Shrivastava provide able support.
