After the 'Aladin' disaster, one approaches this romcom, also starring Riteish Deshmukh and Jacqueline Fernandez, with a little bit of trepidation. But this Milap Zaveri film turns out to be fairly enjoyable. It has a light, breezy tone to it, is silly in places and funny, in others. In short, it manages to hook you along, as long as you don't have too many expectations from it.
Director Zhaveri has penned many comic capers like 'Masti' and 'Heyy Babyy' and finally makes his directorial debut with this movie. He definitely shows his flair for the comic genre and invests this story of an alien and a human being with enough comic moments to make one forget its bizarre premise.
Riteish enacts a loser in the film, and one must say that he is getting to be quite an expert in this role. Anyway, Mr. Loser called Rajesh has a friend, played by Vishal Malhotra, another born loser. A Gujarati, he lives a protected life with his loving parents, played by Satish Shah and Supriya Pilgaonkar.
A clapper boy on the sets of a film, the love of his life, the AD, Natasha (Sonal Sehgal), just thinks of him as a good friend. Just when he despairs of ever finding true love, Tara (Fernandez) enters his life. An alien from Venus, she is on a short trip to Planet Earth to find true love.
It falls on Rajesh and his friend to ferry her around and take care of her as she tries to find true love with the young superstar, Desh (Ruslaan Mumtaz). Trouble starts when Rajesh loses his heart to her, but cannot believe he stands a chance with Desh around.
The film works extremely well in the first half when the director is introducing his hero and his heroine and their respective stories. This half is absorbing as most of the comic action is centred here. His characters like Rajesh, the loser, his father, are constantly on the look out for some sleazy fun. The inhabitants at the film set, including Farah Khan, are all quite interesting and well done. Since he has cast his actors well, the film falls into place quite perfectly.
But in the second half, the director shifts his focus to the love story between Rajesh and Tara and the third angle in this triangle, Desh, the superstar. So far, Zaveri had the courage to be original, but in this half, he falls prey to clich?s. The film now gets predictable and fails to hold one's interest.
Zaveri makes a confident debut in the genre that he is most comfortable in. One just wishes that he could have worked a little harder on the second half of the film. The film's music has been composed by Sajid-Wajid and is quite pleasant on the ears. The cinematography by Attar Singh Saini is competent.
As for the actors, Riteish is perfectly cast as the loser and he essays his role very well indeed. He is very well supported by Vishal Malhotra, who plays his best friend in the movie. The two share a very good chemistry on screen. Riteish also shares a fabulous chemistry on screen with his female lead, Jacqueline. She manages to carry of her role quite well.
Ruslaan Mumtaz also delivers a competent performance. Satish Shah and Supriya Pilgaonkar are quite delightful as Ritesh's Gujarati parents. So is Sonal Sehgal. As for the stars, Farah Khan and Akshay Kumar, they add the required gloss with their appearances. On the whole, the film turns out to be fairly entertaining. Do see it?on planet earth.
