Rohit Shetty’s films in the Golmaal series have entertained the hell out of us over the past few years, because of which, I was quite keen to watch the fourth film in the series. However, does Golmaal Again prove to be an apt Diwali treat for us? Read on...

golmaal-2This time, orphans and rivals Gopal (Ajay Devgn) and Madhav (Arshad Warsi) and their sidekicks Laxman (Shreyas Talpade), Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor) and Lakshman (Kunal Kemmu) team up to save the orphanage that they grew up in from the evil designs of Vasu Reddy (Prakash Raj) and Nikhil (Neil Nitin Mukesh), who want to usurp the land for their own projects.

golmaal-3Helping the five protagonists in this task are Anna Matthew (Tabu) and Khushi (Parineeti Chopra), their childhood friend, who has a secret to hide. Will the heroes manage to save the day? Watch the film to find out....

golmaal-7

As for performances are concerned, everyone has put in their best, though special mention must be made of Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra, who own their scene with effortless ease. Parineeti and Tabu, who are new to the franchise, provide able support to the narrative while the lead cast has done a decent job.

golmaal-6To be very honest, while I usually enjoy mindless comedies and had laughed till my sides hurt while watching the earlier Golmaal films, Golmaal Again barely made me guffaw barring a couple of scenes featuring Sanjay Mishra and Johnny Lever.

The abundance of special effects used in the film, give it a very cartoon-like quality and the situations and dialogues seem to match the look of the film for there is a lot of slapstick humour and juvenile humour. The earlier Golmaal films specialised in making you laugh through its whacky dialogues, clever wordplay and crazy characters, but this film seems determined to rely more on slapstick than situational comedy.

golmaal-8If that was not all, this time, instead of dishing out a ‘holds no barred’ laugh riot, Shetty has tried to give an emotional twist to the tale, which was neither required nor welcome. Moreover, Shetty makes the unforgivable mistake of introducing age-old tropes like avenging ghosts, evil construction magnates hell-bent on destroying an orphanage full of innocent kids et al.

In conclusion, if you are keen on a laugh riot, better stick to Shetty’s earlier Golmaal films...
