The Dragon Ball franchise has seen 20 films before Tetsuro Kodama's Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and most of them have been crowd-pleasing. The 21st film is no different either. Well, that's good news for the die-hard fans, but this one doesn't add anything new or exciting to the series either. It definitely extends the visual graphs as it was the first Dragon Ball Anime to be produced mainly using 3D animation. With some new characters and old tactics in hand, Dragon Ball Super : Super Hero lives up to the expectations, if not surpasses them. Those who are interested in seeing the story of Piccolo and Gohan are going to enjoy it, while others will miss some of those popular characters.Tetsuro Kodama's latest Dragon Ball Super film follows Piccolo and his former student Gohan as they go on a mission to save the world from the newly reformed Red Ribbon Army. Hedo, who is released from jail, accepts the offer of the Red Ribbon Army and gives them two Androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2, who are tough to beat. Piccolo unleashes his powers as well as makes Gohan unleash his powers to beat the monster, but will it be enough? Watch this explosive anime flick to find out.
The writing here is done by keeping an underage audience in mind, so there are no intellectual moments as such. But didn't you know that before? You did, I suppose. Well, the matter isn't too difficult for the fans because they know every character and their features. The movie goes just as planned with all those cliches of heroism, and the kids will enjoy the ride for sure. But has it got anything extra or advanced considering the subsequent effects of the franchise? The answer is no. It is nothing else but a fan service. That's all there is to it. Nevertheless, it is enjoyable.
The voice cast has done a fair job, and it's difficult to judge the acting department while reviewing an animated film because the voice cast and anime characters aren't live on-screen artists. Anyways, the voice looked fairly good, and the animation work was indeed nice. The visual effects are worth watching (even though I missed a 3D viewing) for the new action sequences that are fast-paced as well as visually splendid.
The Dragon Ball series has evolved over the years with the characters that became popular amongst kids. The design is right here, but the perception isn't. It could have been a much better flick with a better antagonist and plenty of conflicts. Some of the characters have been completely neglected here, but thankfully, Piccolo has got the biggest exploration till date. Many people have said it before that Piccolo could be used better and excessively, and that has finally happened with Dragon Ball Super : Super Hero. Gohan and that cute girl add some lovable moments to the somewhat tidy script. It may bore you in the first half, but it has saved a lot of explosive and aggressive stuff for the last 20–25 minutes.
Tetsuro Kodama takes you on a fan park ride. You get to see what you expect from a Dragon Ball film, but is it enough? The answer depends on individual expectations. Kodama's attempt is nothing but to keep the franchise value alive, and he succeeds in doing so. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is a typical Dragon Ball film, and it's considerably good, but not a top-class film at all. If you have a list of your favourite Dragon Ball films, then this one may not end up in the top 5 or top 10. So keep your expectations in check and enjoy 95 minutes at Dragon Ball Fan Park.
