"D" is a movie with a backdrop of the underworld and mafia rivalry. It is apparently based on Dawood Ibrahim's life and is touted as prequel to "Satya" and "Company". It is Deshu's story, played by Randeep Hooda, who makes a career in the underworld and rides to the top.
Deshu (Randeep Hooda) is a mechanic in the Gulf who comes to Mumbai for his wife's funeral. Disappointed by the fact that her death was caused improper and inadequate treatment, Randeep decides to make big money by taking up a career in the underworld. He joins Don Goga Kapoor's gang, and wins his admiration by killing his rival-Don Raju Mawani. Yashpal Sharma and Sushant Singh are Goga's sons who are visibly perturbed with Deshu's unrestrained climb to the top of the underworld while they are sidelined.
Chunkey Pandey is another member of the gang and is Randeep's partner in crime. Isha Koppikar plays Chukey's love interest. Rukhsar is Deshu's mistress, which makes Yashpal and Sushant more envious of him. Yashpal and Sushant try to kill Deshu to re-establish their power within the gang. Who wins the battle for power and finishes the rival is revealed in the climax.
Production values are appropriate. The cinematography is realistic and makes the film authentic. Composer-lyricist Nitin Raikwar's item number is not anything worth singing about, and it is the only song in the film. The action of the film is ordinary.
The script is sketchy with the mere narration of incidents one after the other. There is no attempt at building up characters and situations. Also, the romance between Deshu and Rukhsar is not established properly.
Performance-wise, Randeep Hooda is a remarkable discovery. He has the screen presence and poise of a lead actor. He shows potential to reach tremendous heights as an actor. He is an artiste to be watched. Rukhsar gets very limited scope, but she manages to come through as a competent actress. Rukhsar's come back to Mumbai is welcome. Isha Koppikar is wasted in the film while Chunky Pandey is good and he could not have asked for a better come-back in the industry. Goga Kapoor, Yashpal Sharma and Sushant Singh show their usual competence as actors.
As the director, debutant Vishram Sawant displays technical competence and does a remarkable job for his debut.
