Two of the finest veteran actors, Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Naseeruddin Shah, have been teamed up by Saibal Mitra in A Holy Conspiracy. A topic like Fantacism is too small because hardly anyone knows about it in our country. And the irony is that it is entained on the people who belong to the lower classes and have never heard of this word. Saibal Mitra's film is about the same issue, and hence it becomes a very important film for today's nation when political and religious conspiracies are well mixed and served for different purposes. A Holy Conspiracy is more like a debate than a film because it speaks and explains the issues rather than being stuck just as a film.
Kunal Joseph Baske is accused of refusing to follow the school’s doctrine to teach the Biblical story of Creation before teaching Darwinian Evolution. Anton De Souza (Naseerudin Shah) takes up his case as he believes fanaticism will kill the right to education soon, while his old buddy, the Reverend Basanta Kumar Chatterjee (Soumitra Chatterjee), is a huge believer in Christianity and God. The courtroom drama showcases their arguments, which leaves us stunned with some unacceptable events and facts that are taking over the nation, especially youth.
A Holy Conspiracy is one of the most important and timely topics to emerge from the film in recent years. It's not just about religious faith, but its oppression as well. How political agencies use religious faith and names of God for their own conspiracies and how it creates differences between upper class and lower classes, is all you get to see in the film. The screenplay is engaging and does not lose the grip, except for a few moments where the editing could have made a difference. A Holy Conspiracy has some amazing, hard-hitting, and educational dialogues that will stay with you for a long time.
Naseerudin Shah proves again how great an actor he is, and that age doesn't matter. Rather, it helps you because you become more mature and understand what to do. He nails the role like a pro! What a dialogue delivery Sir. You are a freaking huge legend. Soumitra Chatterjee left us a couple of years ago, but thankfully we got to see him again with this film, only to re-acknowledge his acting legacy. The chemistry between these two legends is knockout. The supporting cast members Partha Pratim Majumdar, Amrita Chattopadhyay, Sramon Chattopadhyay, Kaushik Sen, Biplab Dasgupta, Anasua Majumdar, Pradip Kumar Ray and Jagannath Guha are fantastic too.
A Holy Conspiracy has a few dragging moments caused by music and editing. Saibal Mitra could have monitored them better with a keen approach, but he misses the nuances. That's sad. The film suddenly slips during some scenes with some old-age dramatic background score and glitches. However, the faults do not overtake the pluses of the film, which makes the entire show pass the exam. Mitra's film is far ahead in terms of debatable content-driven cinema and, subsequently, turns out to be a big debate by itself. The pre-climax scene takes you by storm, but the last frames are typical. Nevertheless, A Holy Conspiracy will make you shout, "Holy smoke! What a Film! What a topic!" That's enough to recommend it.
