Music Directors Salim–Sulaiman are just back from their North American Concert Tour which was a stupendous success and naturally they are quite excited about it. The composers who were hardly seen in 2014 (except for Ungli and Mardaani) are looking forward to an exciting 2015 having bagged quite a few prestigious projects.
Composer Salim Merchant talks about this and more in this fun interview. Excerpts:
Buzz is that the North American Tour was a superb success by all accounts.
Thank You so much. Yes, we got various accolades and recognition throughout the tour. Right from being white-hatted by the Calgary Mayor (NaheedNenshi) to being honored with the certificate of merit from the Governor’s office in New York by Ambassador Mulay to having Houston’s Mayor Annise Parker proclaiming November 16th as the Salim and Sulaiman Merchant Day and of course the love of the fans, this tour indeed has been a stupendous success for us.
Recognition from top ranked officials and even having a day dedicated to you must have given you a personal high. Please comment.
I did not want it to ever end. We got great invitations to collaborate with orchestras in Canada and to take it to the next level of exchange of musical traditions and we created an awareness of South Asian music in the local communities. In fact, in our next tour, we hope to have Canadian orchestras playing Bollywood music with us and in a way try to get our music to reach their communities.
On a more personal note, you are an accomplished musician as well as a much sought after singer Which role do you prefer most – singing or composing?
I always consider myself as a Composer first – the singer bit is just an add-on; it happened as just a byproduct and I am happy about it. But I will always first and foremost be a composer. But whenever I feel, I should sing, I will continue to do so.
Can you tell us more about your future/upcoming projects here in Bollywood?
We are currently working on ace Cinematographer Binod Pradhan’s directorial debut, Wedding Pulao which is a sweet and fun film based on destination weddings and the songs have turned out really well. That apart our Hollywood film Sold is on its way to release and the promotional activity is happening. Also we have just started work on Prakash Jha’s Gangaajal 2 for which we have just finished composing a song. Also on the pipeline is Director Pradeep Sarkar’s next film. We bonded really well with Pradeep da during Mardaani (2014) and are really looking forward to work with him in his next project. It sure is a good time and we are happy to work with good film makers who have a good ear for music.
