Sonakshi Sinha – “So many of these so called 100 crore affairs are not a benchmark of a good or bad film”

After appearing as a leading lady in a string of 100 crore affairs, Sonakshi Sinha is happy to be changing gears. While Akira is a step in that direction, her subsequent releases like Force 2 and Noor promise a new Sonakshi for the big screen. While her action sequences in Akira have been appreciated, what has also been notable is the manner in which she has took the responsibility of entire film on her shoulders.
We get chatting with Sonakshi.
Original action superstars like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn have been mighty impressed with your action in Akira and are vocal in their appreciation. That must have pleased you, right?
That was quite encouraging as they have been doing action for so long. Akshay and Ajay are two of the best action heroes in the country. When they appreciate, then they are not just saying so because they have worked with me. If they hadn’t liked my action, they would have said even that to me. The fact that they noticed and appreciated was great. (Smiles) Guess a lot of hard work that went in was worth it after all.
As a director, A.R. Murugadoss is the one who brought in ‘masala’ elements to the Hindi film industry with Ghajini. He is now pushing the boundaries with you as his female central protagonist in the film.
He is trying to establish that when a hero does what he does then it is perceived to be all right but when a girl does the same then it needs to be explained. He wanted to bring about a change in what females are perceived to do. Honestly, it all fits in well into the story. Akira was a perfect script that I came across
Murugadoss is also the one who introduced the 100 crore club in India. While that happened with a male protagonist Aamir Khan, you must be keeping fingers crossed to see big bucks coming in for Akira too?
I hope you are right (smiles). Honestly, more than anything, so many of these so called 100 crore affairs are not a benchmark of a good or bad film. It is a number game that media likes to throw around. I am happy to be in a film which has some kind of meaning. This is a film that has pushed me to the limits. I hope it does good business now!
The film has your Lootera producer Anurag Kashyap as the main villain. That brings on a lot of drama into the film.
Absolutely! I feel he is pucca takkar ka villain in the film. He has done such a fantastic job. He is so menacing in the film and has understood the character really well.
Meanwhile, you would next be seen in another out and out action film Force 2, this time with John Abraham.
Yes, there has been a lot of fun with John in Force 2. I am doing some cool action alongside him.
While you are also about to wrap up shooting for Noor, what happens next?
I am still in the process of choosing what I am going to do next. See, there has been a change in perception about what I want to do after the three different roles that I have taken up in Akira, Force 2 and Noor. I wish to leverage that standing I have managed with that.
