Ram Gopal Varma Speaks on Darling
How different is Darling from Bhoot. What will the audience get to see in this film?
Thematically Darling is a different genre film. It is a horror comedy which makes you laugh. It begins as a romantic comedy then becomes a murder mystery and then turns to horror film. It is a highly emotional relationship story where the basic premise starts with comedy.
Fardeen’s look in the film and the fear that he has portrayed is almost similar to that of Urmila Matondkar in Bhoot. Won’t be it be repetitive for the audience?
A look can be repetitive because it is the same reaction that anybody would give when seeing a ghost. How different can it be? Just because I am making a film doesn’t make it any different. Just because I have the reputation of making different films doesn’t mean there can be no comparison. It can be anything from Masala Thali, comedy, romantic. The unique combinations keep changing all the time. One can’t categories a film or the human reactions.
You are directing a film for the outside banner and T-Series and Bhushan Kumar are known for the musical genres. Has the publicity of the film pleased you?
I am extremely happy with the promotion of the film. I’ve got a very good feedback. At the end of the day Bhushan knows what he wants. In fact I give him the credit for the songs. Specially ‘tadap’ and ‘na khushi’ it was his taste and I went by his judgment. Not that I didn’t like them. I have shot the songs myself. Eventually if I had made Darling myself I would have made a serious genre film. I am glad it was his film and it was because of him that it has turned into a musical horror film which is something I could never think of.
Esha has been portrayed in an intense role which she has never done before. And it is said that the Tamil version is already out even before Darling could be?
Esha’s character in the film has been treated with intensity. She is a good actress who has not been utilized. Regarding the Tamil version there is no Tamil version. They are all rumors.
It was reported that you had signed Bipasha for the film earlier what went wrong. Do you plan to work with her in the future?
Every film goes through a transition. We work out on the project everyday and from the time of the planning to the real execution there are a lot of changes. I have high regards for her. Right now I have no plans of working with her but yes if the character demands and she fits the role I definitely will. There are so many if’s and but’s in a project you know.
It is said that an item song which was going to be used in another project has been pasteurized on Nisha Kothari in the film?
I don’t understand this item song. The song is used in the context of the film and it is an art, just another song. I had liked the song earlier and it couldn’t be used in any other film. It fit the shot perfectly well hence it has been used.
It was reported that you burst out into a song during the shooting of the film?
There was this scene where Fardeen is doing an intense horror scene and he has to imagine a song from a ghost film. Something like twenty years back and we thought of Bees Saal Baad. I was just giving him a cue with the song.
