‘s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola
would be the first biggie that would kick-start the New Year. While the film is special for her due to reasons more than one, for audience it is the quirky title as well as the overall look and feel along with an unconventional casting which has set the tone. With this Vishal Bhardwaj
film being just a week away, Anushka chirps away.
Did you freak out on being told about the film’s title?
Guess what, I had a narration of the script before the film had a name to name it. When I finally heard the title, I was quite excited. Yes, I am aware that people took some time to take to the title, especially before the promo came out. I think now everyone is getting a good hang of it.
Well, seems like this is the story of your life. It was the same with Jab Tak Hai Jaan as well. However, while that film had you in a frothy outing again, this time around you seem to be going bold.
That is something subjective. See, what happens in Vishal’s films is that if a girl has to be bold, he doesn’t put a scene that demonstrates her being bold. He wants the audience to discover what she is. He doesn’t showcase her like in a big departmental store where you see her the way she is. He doesn’t take that straight forward approach that ‘Look, she is bold’ or ‘Hey, she is fun loving persona’. He gives his characters layers and wants audience to explore them.
In these multiple layers to your characterisation, there is also a language element coming in, what with you speaking Haryanvi, right?
As a matter of fact I don’t speak much of Haryanvi in the film except for may be a place or two. Bijlee is someone who has been outside Haryana and studied in Delhi and London. This is the reason why she sticks out of the crowd amongst local people. However there was no preparation required from the language perspective. What I had to do was to work on my characterisation that had nothing to do with the language. I had to understand it all on a psychological level.
Weren’t you disappointed when you couldn’t have Ajay Devgn opposite you as Matru? After all, he was supposed to be the first choice as Matru before he walked out and then Imran Khan came in.
I think every film has its destiny. There are actors who are destined to work on a film. I am happy to have Imran in there. He brings fresh energy with him. Whatever has happened, it is for the best of the film.
