With at least one big success to his name practically every year, Ajay Devgn is now looking at closing the year with another big one to his name – Action Jackson. Since Prabhu Dheva is at the helm of direction and Eros along with Gordhan Tanwani sparing no expense in making, promotion, marketing and release of the biggie, a bad season of some back to back unsuccessful films could well end with this out and out entertainer.
In a candid conversation, Ajay Devgn opens up about his consistency ay the box office, the whole mystery around the film’s plot and reinvention of action with Action Jackson.
In terms of consistency, you continue to deliver one major success practically every year. Is there a major pressure that you keep in your head or based on experience, it all comes easy to you?
I will tell you something. Earlier when movies released, audience as well as actors didn’t think so much about screen count, budget, recovery, box office etc. etc. Today things have changed. There is so much of pressure to make sure that a film performs, and performs big because everyone is looking at you. For actors like me who have been in the business for 23-24 years, one hit or flop doesn’t make a difference actually. But then media pressure is so much that they end up writing 10 things agar picture thodi si bhi unnees-bees ho jaaye. Upar se cost of filmmaking has increased so much jiski wajah se agar picture nahi chalti toh losses bhi bahaut badh jaate hain. Isliye that kind of pressure is always there.
As for Action Jackson, what is apparent though is that absolutely nothing has been shared around the film’s core plot. Why is that so?
This is a conscious call that we took. Reason being that things unfold in a big way here with lot of twists and turns in the narrative. In case of Singham Returns, there was a clear cut straight story and hence the promo was unveiled accordingly too. Here in Action Jackson, we are holding cards close to our chest.
The ‘action card’ seems to have been adequately revealed though. Looks like the film is quite high on that. For someone who has reinvented action every decade, first with Phool aur Kaante and then with Rohit Shetty films, has there been something new brought on with Action Jackson?
I think so. After a long time there are sword fight and samurai action in there. I had to practice a lot. Moreover, Prabhu Dheva is also very particular about getting things right. I had to be sure about the body posture, the stance I was taking, the works. Prabhu Dheva has designed it all in a truly different way and there is so much more to that than what you see in the promo.
So, for the records, are you playing a cop in the film or not?
I am not. But then, as you said, we are keeping all cards close to our chest. Tension kya hai, aaj picture release ho gayi hai. Khud check kar lo (smiles).
