Rakhee Gulzar Trivia
The story of Raakhee took a very bad turn when she tried to go the “Meena Kumari way”. She was only offered mother’s roles and now even those roles have stopped coming to her. She has started living the life of a recluse and is not seen out of her house, forget attending any award ceremony or even functions arranged by her close friends and well wishers. She however still signs her name as Raakhee Gulzar.
When asked what is her greatest achievement, she said it is Bosky and Meghna as she is called officially and says she is sure her daughter would make a very good director one day.
Raakhee did everything she could for her family and even made one of her brothers a producer, but she has been very unhappy with the way her family has taken advantage of her.
She was very thrilled when Ramesh Sippy, the maker of ‘Sholay’ cast her to play Dilip Kumar’s wife and Amitabh’s mother in ‘Shakti.’ Ramanand Sagar signed them as a couple in his film called ‘Sanam’ which did go beyond the launching stage.
She was a great admirer of Dev Anand with whom she did some good films and even today whenever there is a Dev Anand release, she has a special ‘puja’ for his success.
She did the maximum number of films with Amitabh Bachchan. They played lovers in most of them, but Raakhee was so confident about her talent that she even played Amitabh’s mother in ‘Laawaaris’ and ‘Shakti’ and the two still continued to play lovers.
Raakhee always had this one complaint against Gulzar. She said he wrote the best roles for all the other heroines, but never wrote a film for her. Gulzar’s answer was, “I had given you the greatest role of my life when I accepted you as my wife. What greater role could be than that”.
Gulzar went to America for the first time, leaving Raakhee and Bosky alone and when he returned he was shocked to find that Rakhee had betrayed his trust and had signed two big films for Yash Chopra who was just starting his own banner. Raakhee was one of the heroines of ‘Daag’ and then ‘Kabhie Kabhie’. Gulzar was a man of his word and the couple separated on this issue and the two have been living separately, even though they meet quite often.
They had their first and only daughter who Gulzar named Bosky “because her touch was like silk”. They were living in an apartment where Jeetendra was their neighbour and both Gulzar and Jeetendra saw success at the same time and built their own bungalows on Pali Hill. Gulzar’s drawing room and sitting room were crowded with national and international awards. He also had an oil painting of the actress Meena Kumari done by M.R.Achrekar who was Raj Kapoor’s art director and a very good painter. Gulzar was a fan of Meena’s poetry and before dying she handed over all her poems to him and one wonders what he has done with them
She found her first big commercial success in ‘Sharmilee’ with Shashi Kapoor. The film was another hit and there was no stopping her. She fell in love with Gulzar and married him. Their wedding reception saw the top of the industry in attendance. Gulzar’s condition was that she would never act in films again and she agreed.
It was the Rajshri who always encouraged fresh talent who found in her a perfect heroine and gave her a very big break in ‘Jeevan Mrityu’. The film with Dharmendra in one of the best roles of his career was a golden jubilee hit and Raakhee was on her way to big time success.
She married a struggling director, Ajay Biswas but their marriage did not last long. It was after their break up that she was inspired by Hemant Kumar to come to Bombay.
Raakhee who belonged to a middle class Bengali family started her career as an actress when she was just out of her teens. She made a striking beginning and signed a number of films. She had two very strong supporters in the veteran actress, Sandhya Roy and the singer Hemant Kumar.
