Nirupa Roy is synonymous with the word 'mother'. In fact, she is the one to have brought a new dimension to the film world. Remember, the blind mother who receives blood from all her three sons albeit unknowingly in the film 'Amar Akbar Anthony'. Well, Nirupa Roy is a veteran with over a hundred films to her credit. Nirupa has been the heroine for most of the top stars of the fifties and ironically, the mother of some of the superstars of the younger generation. Nirupa Roy started her career way back in the fifties in films such as 'Munimji', 'Musafir' and Bimal Roy's epic saga on a bit of land, 'Do Bigha Zameen'. The Sixties followed with the Dilip Kumar's tryst with his double, 'Ram Aur Shyam' which became a superhit. Other films included 'Jigree Dost', 'Mujhe jeene Do', 'Gumrah' and Nirupa Roy's performance in 'Chaya' brought her a film fare award in the best supporting actress category. In the next decade, Nirupa graduated to being in the senior roles of mother, bhabhi and the likes. Nevertheless, her performances did not lose the authenticity. In fact she is remembered for her portrayals of the ultimate mother of Hindi cinema apart from of course "the"Mother India; Nargis. Some of her most memorable performances have been in 'Deewar', 'Amar Akbar Anthony', 'Aan Milo Sajna', 'Abhinetri', 'Maa Aur Mamta' , 'Pyar Ka Rishta', 'Roti' and the list seems endless. To this day, Nirupa Roy remains a fine actress in every era from the 50s to the 80s.
