Shashikala Shesadari was rediscovered by showman Subhash Ghai and rechristened as Meenakshi. She was still nursing her hurt from her first film Manoj Kumar's 'Painter Babu' where she had a drastic role. Before she could be given the title of a flop actress, 'Hero' came as her lifesaver. 'Hero', the title role played by Jackie Shroff, helped Meenakshi a lot. She was considered as someone who could give a run for her money to the then number one heroine. In fact, she was very much in the process of doing so. But she did not get the right kind of movies. Some of her films are 'Meri Jung' (Anil Kapoor), 'Andhi Toofan', 'Dehleej' (Raj Babbar), 'Inaam Dus Hazaar', 'Satyamev Jayte', 'Swati', 'Nache Nagin Gali Gali', 'Ganga Jamuna Saraswati', 'Bade Ghar Ki Beti', 'Bees Saal Baad' and 'Shahenshan'. Meenakshi's greatest asset has been her dancing abilities and because of that she was considered as a most skillful actress. She oozed out so much of sex appeal that she looked great in a simple cotton saree. She did not have to wear dreadful wigs and gaudy dresses to please her audiences. She was simplicity personified. One movie she will be mostly remembered for is 'Damini' where she was able to captivate the audiences to the fullest. The entire movie had a tremendous presence of Meenakshi and that is quite rare in the world of male-dominated cinema. She could have continued with more such movies but she decided to quit filmdom after she tied the knot. Though she did a couple of more movies, yet none were to match the performance she gave in 'Damini'. The film, many consider, to be the highpoint of Meenakshi's career.
