In the golden jubilee years of his career, Majrooh Sultanpuri, whose pen reflects the national fervour, through his poems, has written more than eight thousand songs, for over 330 films, including 3 in Bhojpuri. Given any situations, any kind of theme, he was apt. He was also known as a trend setter. His language had the smell of the soil and it was due to him that Ghazals found a place in film songs and it was also because of him that the music directors like S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, O. P. Nayyar, Khayyam, Laxmikant Pyarelal, S. Madan, Rajesh Roshan, Anand Milind, Jatin-Lalit and Anu Malik gained prominent recognition. Beside this he has traversed a long journey from his first film A. R. Kardar's 'Shahjahan' in 1949 to K. P. Singh's 'Hum To Mohabbat Karega' and Tips Music's 'Kya Kehna!'
He received the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award in 1965 for the film Dosti.
