Will Padman Akshay Kumar Help Women Get ‘Wings’ To Fly?
The Center received major flak when it exempted bindi, sindoor and kajal from GST but not a necessity like sanitary napkins and a few days ago the Delhi High Court too slammed them for their bizarre decision. Akshay Kumar will be next seen in Padman, which revolves around the true story of Tamil Nadu-based social activist Arunachalam Muruganantham, who revolutionized the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkins machine. With such apathy from the Center towards the basic needs of women, Akshay’s film comes as a ray of hope as with his superstardom he will be able to reach out to people in the nooks and corners of the country and may help to remove the taboo and stigma associated with menstruation. What Akshay is doing is quite commendable because a mainstream movie on this topic will certainly create awareness but now, we wonder if during the promotions of the film he will talk to the law and decision makers of the nation and request them to exempt sanitary napkins from GST. We hope so, as it will be a win-win situation for all. The film and the makers will get their due and good coverage and sanitary napkins will become more affordable. The film releases on January 26 and we hope Padman becomes the wind beneath every Indian woman’s ‘wings’, this Republic Day. The film is based on Twinkle Khanna’s book, The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad, which is inspired from Muruganantham’s life and it also stars Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor.
