Who can ever forget Kajol‘s rain dance or Shah Rukh Khan‘s ruk jaa in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge? Sixteen years after it released, Aditya Chopra‘s directorial debut continues to capture the hearts of cinema goers across the nation. All those fans and many more send out a prayer and hearty birthday wishes as the brilliant yet elusive Chopra scion turns 40. (21st May)
Born to ace filmmaker Yash Chopra and his wife Pamela, Aditya was a shy child whose hobbies included watching movies, reading books and dancing. He was educated at Bombay Scottish School where director Karan Johar was one of his best friends.
As the eldest son of such an illustrious director, Aditya was exposed to films from a very young age and started working as an assistant director when he was just 18. After gaining experience on the sets of his father’s hit films such as Chandni, Lamhe and Darr, he wrote and directed Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995. The Shah Rukh Khan–Kajol starrer went on to become a huge blockbuster and Aditya had his first taste of success at the age of 23.
After that, Aditya penned the story and dialogues for Dil To Pagal Hai before returning to direction with Mohabbatein. The film not just revived Amitabh Bachchan‘s career but also acted as a launch pad for Aditya’s younger brother, Uday Chopra. Some of the subsequent films he produced include Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Hum Tum, Dhoom, Veer Zaara, Bunty Aur Babli, Salaam Namaste, Fanaa, Dhoom 2 and Chak De India. In 2007, Aditya became the Vice Chairman of Yash Raj Films in 2007.
Aditya’s third directorial project was the Shah Rukh-Anushka Sharma starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi which was released in 2008 and went on to become the highest grossing film for Yash Raj Films.
He was married to his high school sweetheart Payal for eight years, but the couple parted ways in 2009.
As he enters the 4th decade of his life, we’d like to wish the reticent ace much gaiety on the personal front and hope that Aditya doesn’t make his fans wait for many more years before producing a directorial masterpiece.
