He was the one who invented the entire No. 1 franchise more than a couple of decades back. It all started with Coolie No. 1 where producer Vashu Bhagnani collaborated with David Dhawan first and then followed it up with Hero No. 1 and Biwi No. 1, both emerging as big hits.
However, he didn’t want to extend his innings only with established major directors. As he became more prolific, he worked with number of new filmmakers who were knocking the doors of Bollywood.
Circa 2018 and history is repeating itself as he is giving break to Aleya Sen and Chakri Toleti with Dil Juunglee and Welcome To New York respectively.
“That’s how Vashuji likes to work; he encourages new talent and once he decides to back them up, he doesn’t let any stones unturned to make their films special. This is the case with both Dil Juunglee and Welcome To New York, the promotion of which is on at full swing. He has given these films the right production values, has set the stage in an appropriate manner and is now releasing them in the right fashion,” says an insider.
While for Aleya this is her first film, Chakri is making a foray into Bollywood after working on a couple of South films.
“Vashuji has worked with newcomers before as well. A. Muthu [Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya], Ashu Trikha [Deewanapan], Anupam Kher [Om Jai Jagadish], Ramanjit Juneja & Apurva Asrani [Out of Control], Remo D’Souza [F.A.L.T.U.] and Syed Ahmad Afzal [Youngistaan] – each one of them came behind the camera for the first time ever when they made these films,” a close associate of the producer adds, “He trusted in their abilities to deliver the goods.”
Same is the case now with Aleya Sen and Chakri Toleti as well, both of whom have tried their hands with different stories for their respective films.
“Dil Juunglee is a very different kind of a romcom. Taapsee Pannu has traditionally played very confident and self assured girls in most of her films (most recently Pink and Naam Shabana). However in Dil Juunglee she is playing a nerdy girl,” the insider continues.
“On the other hand Welcome To New York is as experimental as it gets. It is woven around the IIFA awards that were held in New York last year,” he adds, “It is going to be a truly unique film and with Sonakshi Sinha and Diljit Dosanjh in lead roles along with Karan Johar, Riteish Deshmukh, Lara Dutta, Boman Irani, Sushant Singh Rajput and Rana Daggubati playing themselves, the film is going to be a riot.”
We indeed hope for that.
