Abhay Deol, who will soon be seen as a Tamil IAS officer in Dibakar Banerjee‘s Shanghai, took lessons in the language to get his character right.
And so impressed is the director with his actor, that he has claimed that Deol has surpassed Shah Rukh Khan‘s Tamil act in RA.One.
At the first look launch of the film, Dibakar said, "I can say he did better than Shah Rukh’s act. Abhay started taking lessons for Tamil, three months before the shoot began. He had asked for a Tamil coach who can teach him Tamil alphabets, language and the accent. He also used to rehearse Tamil lines with me before the shoot."
Abhay Deol said that getting the accent right was important to get into the skin of the character. "This character is alien to me, I worked more on the language. The character that I play is egoistical, short-tempered, he is very reserved, cold and religious person. Language was a barrier for me as I play a Tamil guy in this film. So on the accent part, we did not want to make it sound stereotype, like South Indian characters in Hindi films," said Deol.
"We had someone on the sets who was Tamil, he used to read the dialogues to me, I did study the language. I took accent only in certain words only as we did not want to stereotype it. So how do we not make stereotype and yet make it sound Tamil, was my main agenda," he further added.
Starring Deol, Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin in the lead roles, the film is slated to release on 8 June, 2012.
