Sid-Varun-Alia: Students Can Change School Next Year

By Joginder Tuteja, MovieTalkies.com, 23 October 2012 Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt

They may be the students of the year but Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt are free to move on. They can pretty much change schools (read: work with production house other than Dharma as well). Though they do have a three film contract each with Karan Johar, it is a non-exclusive one.

"After a couple of bitter episodes early on in his career, Karan Johar has always ensured that there is a written contract drawn between his company and the cast as well as crew members who come on board. It isn't just a whole bunch of directors launched by him who are committed to work with him. Even actors, whether experienced or newcomers, have to follow certain norms. In case of Siddharth, Varun and Alia, it is no different", informs an insider.

However it isn't a stringent contract, at least with his actors, as they are free to work with other filmmakers as well as long as they do their three films at least with him in a stipulated time period.

"This is a good foresight and is a win-win situation for all", comments an industry veteran, "Now look at the soaring fortunes of each of the three students ever since the film's release. Industry bigwigs were anyways showing interest in signing them on and now they are all the more sure about bringing them on board for their films. Be it corporate houses of independent established production houses, their eyes are set on the three youngsters."

In fact Sajid Nadiadwala is said to have signed Alia opposite Arjun Kapoor for 2 States already which, incidentally, is a co-production with Karan himself. Even otherwise, Karan has things under control and the kids launched by him also understand what needs to be done.

Says Varun, "Yes, there is a three film contract with Karan but the simple part is that it is not exclusive. He wants us to work with outsiders as well. Eventually, he has launched us so that we can make a name for ourselves with others as well and not just for him." He too is expected to begin a film with his director brother Rohit Dhawan

Sidharth adds in unison, "Exactly. Karan wants us to be a Bollywood hero, not a Dharma hero." Alia Bhatt has the final word, "Of course before signing any film with others, we will go to Karan for guidance."

With proposals already flowing in for the young ones, guess Karan would have to be available for all the guidance sooner than later.
