R.I.P Dara Singh

We bid adieu to the great wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh. He died at the age of 83 in Mumbai on July 12. His doctor RK Aggarwal was quoted to have said that he died owing to cardiac respiratory arrest at around 7:30 am.

Having played the mighty Hanuman in the mythological television serial Ramayan, Singh has also acted in over 100 films. He was last seen on the big screen in Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met, where he played Kareena Kapoor's grandfather. He was even nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2003.

Dara Singh was born on November 19, 1928, at the Dharmuchuk village of Amritsar, Punjab. He travelled to Singapore at the age of 18, where he took on several chores while practicing wrestling.

In 1954, he scaled great heights as he became the Indian Wrestling Champion. Commonwealth championship came to him in 1959. Finally, he was pronounced the World Champion in 1968 before retiring from active wrestling in 1983.

He has till date remained undefeated. Simultaneously, he even pursued a career in acting. He debuted in the 1962 film King Kong followed by Faulad and Hercules, where he played roles true to his image of an 'Iron Man'.

Apart from playing the macho hero in many Hindi and Punjabi films, Singh is also known to have introduced actress Mumtaz to Bollywood and the two have featured together in about 16 Hindi films.

Singh also went on to produce and direct some films, but is perhaps best remembered for his roles in his later career where he was seen playing the patriarchal figure in films such as Dillagi, Sharaarat, Kal Ho Naa Ho etc.

He was admitted in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on July 7, 2012 following a cardiac arrest. His condition was critical. The doctors attending him had stated that chances of his recovery were remote because of significant damage to his brain.

He breathed his last today morning. May his departed soul rest in peace.
