Movie Review

A Half Baked Effort
Rating (2.5/5)

Release Date : 16 October 2009

Prem Soni makes his debut with 'Main Aur Mrs Khanna', a film which faces strong competition with biggies like 'Blue' and 'All The Best' also in the fray to grab a piece of the Diwali pie. Soni's offering is a little weak and what really is in question here is his storytelling skills. The film is a confused offering as it is neither a comedy nor is it a serious discourse on marriage or love. Of course! the director, thankfully solves the mystery about the 'Main' in the title at the fag end of the movie.

The film's story revolves around Mr and Mrs Khanna, that is, Sameer (Salman Khan) and Raina (Kareena Kapoor) and the distances in their marriage which ultimately lead to geographical distances as well. The reason being that Sameer feels that love is not enough and without a job in Melbourne there is nothing which is right in their marriage. Without bothering about what his better half wants, he decides to leave for Singapore and accept a lucrative offer of business and books his wife for a ticket to Delhi, where she is supposed to stay until he makes his fortune. At the airport terminal, he breaks the news to her and they both go their separate ways. Raina thinks differently and decides to stay back in Melbourne, find a job and wait for Sameer to come back. She finds a job as a salesgirl at the airport itself where she meets and befriends Aakash, who is a waiter at a cafeteria. Aakash is totally smitten by Raina and always refers to her as Mrs Khanna.

Aakash hopes to usurp Sameer's place on her life and become the Mr Khanna for this Mrs Khanna. But his hopes are shortlived as Sameer comes back and Raina is all set to leave Melbourne with him. That's when, Aakash and his friends try to create a rift between the couple but all fails till fate deals them a chance. The web of suspicion threatens to tear Raina and Sameer's marriage apart but their love finally prevails. The other Mr Khanna, that is Aakash, is left lovelorn and alone until another Raina enters his life Deepika Padukone in a guest appearance.

The film doesn't really delve into the inner life of its characters very well. The director doesn't seem very serious about really exploring the life between Raina and Sameer and how they manage to bridge the distance in their marriage. Raina's character seems to be a little too simplistic as she hangs on, wide eyed, telling all that Sameer will come back to her one day, once he makes his fortune. He manages to raise a point when Raina tells Sameer about how he never bothered to even ask her before taking a decision about her life. But it is just as quickly laid to rest. To come back to Aakash's unrequited love for Raina, there never seems to be any good reason given as to why she should do that as he behaves like a juvenile all through and not like a man deeply in love. His plans to create a rift between Raina and Sameer are too childish and fall flat. Also when he finally gets a chance to tell her about his feelings, he just concedes to being a friend. Sameer, of course! guesses, about his true feelings, but reveals so in the end. But by which time it is too late as he and his Mrs Khanna are on their way to create and lead a new life. It may have worked better if the story was told entirely from Aakash's perspective. Only then would the title of 'Main Aur Mrs Khanna' really meant something.

So, yes, it is a confused offering. The real hero, if one wants to look at it as such, is really Sohail Khan as Aakash. Salman plays a role which is really unlike him and he is definitely not very comfortable as he has a very ill defined role as the missing Mr Khanna. Sohail Khan and his sidekick, Yash Tonk, have better defined roles as one can at least understand their motives. Kareena Kapoor plays this lovetstruck girl woman and hangs around with a perpetual look of wonder on her face. Not her fault, as again, she is just as much in the dark about her character as Salman. Sohail plays the typical boisterous character along with Tonk and together, they are hardly a pleasure to watch. Preity Zinta's special appearance and her item number actually manage to perk up the proceedings somewhat. The lady looks lovely, her impish charm which she revealed in 'Dil Se..' is still intact. It's a shame that one isn't getting to see more of her. The director ropes in music composer Bappi Lahiri to play a cameo in the movie, and again, one is not sure why? His character, as shown in first shot is that of a shopowner who bursts into a song every moment. But besides that first shot, he hardly does anything which any other character actor could not have done. As for the rest of the cast, they are just about adequate.
The film was supposedly shot in Melbourne, but one hardly gets to see the beauty of the city as most of the action takes place indoors. The film's music is just about okay. Post 'Wanted', Salman is hot property but there is little that even he can do to lift the movie. The pace is slow in the first half, but kind of lifts in the second half once Salman is back. On a final note, 'Main Aur Mars Khanna' leaves one feeling quite disappointed.
