Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani REVIEWS

Kuch Zyaada Hi 'Lambi' Kahaani!

By , MovieTalkies.com, 31 May 2013 2.5 / 5

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – In Brief:
Ayan Mukerji made a scintillating debut with the coming-of-age drama Wake Up Sid in 2009. With Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the writer-director sticks to the 'coming-of-age' theme. The film revolves around how four fairly different individuals (Bunny, Avi, Aditi and Naina) deal with friendship, love, success, failure and consequently, life!

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – Verdict:
Buddy comedy, coming-of-age drama, travel adventure, marriage extravaganza, familial melodrama and multiple love triangles - Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani mixes up too many elements. There are quite a few sparkling moments in the film. The equations between several characters have been showcased brilliantly. However, owing to some implausible side-plots and the never-ending-length, the film leaves a lot to be desired.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – Short Plot:
3 friends Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor), Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) set off on a trip to Manali, expecting a life-changing experience. Bunny is a middle-class boy who doesn't want to lead his life in the conventional way. In his words, Main daudna chahta hoon, udna chaahta hoon, girna chahta hoon. The effervescent Bunny wants to travel the world, and wants every day in his life to be dramatic and eventful.

Avi is a sentimental (and temperamental) guy, who depends too much on his best friend Bunny. The guy has no focus in life, and cannot handle either alcohol or money.

Strikes A Chord With The Listeners

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani not only brings back the winning combination of Ranbir Kapoor and Ayan Mukerji (after the coming of age movie Wake Up Sid) but also the magical combination of ex flames Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone who are expected to set the screen on fire with their sizzling chemistry along with Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur in pivotal roles. Music for this Dharma Productions film has been composed by Pritam with the lyrics being penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and Kumaar. Dharma Productions is synonymous with musical excellence in their films and the Pritam – Ranbir combination brings back memories of the beautiful and award winning soundtrack from Barfi!. Hence, it is a given that the soundtrack of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani would be in the same league, if not better.

The album opens with Badtameez Dil which has already started its ascent in the popularity charts and for good reason! This scintillating cocktail of Amitabh’s quirky lyrics, Ranbir’s Shammi Kapoor-like moves, Benny Dayal’s energetic singing and last but not the least, the foot tapping racy and fast paced music has worked wonders and the end result is just incredibly awesome. Amitabh’s lyrics need a special mention especially because one would normally find it difficult to appreciate lyrics that border on nonsensical absurdity. But when heard in the context of this catchy number, these madcap lyrics are actually charmingly addictive and add to the wackiness of the song. Benny Dayal is just superb in his rendition with Shefali Alvares providing solid support. An excellent start to the album indeed!

Balam Pichkari is the quintessential Holi Song which has a folk base with some western beats added to it to make it more appealing. The experiment works and how! Music composer cum singer Vishal Dadlani takes centre-stage along with Shalmali Kholgade and together they manage to have a blast singing Amitabh’s fun-filled lyrics in this energetic and entertaining number. One can expect this number to be on top of the playlist of the must-have Holi songs for this year for sure. All-in-all, another outright winner from Pritam.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani TRIVIA

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani director Ayan Mukerji narrated the script to Kalki Koechlin a month before he was going on floors to shoot with Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. At that time Kalki was chilling at home and had some time before she would start shooting for Vishal Bhardwaj's Daayan. She loved the script and instantly agreed not realizing that she would be shooting with Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and Daayan simultaneously.
