Son Of Sardaar SYNOPSIS

Son of Sardar is a romantic comedy which takes you straight into the heartland of colourful Punjab and larger- than- life Punjabis. They take pride about their hospitality & warmth but are mighty serious about matters regarding honour & dignity.

It is the story of Jassi (Ajay Devgn) -peace loving, a happy-go-lucky Sardar, who lives in London trying to make a living. He gets to know of his ancestral property back home in Punjab which he wants to sell off to shape up his pockets. Jassi embarks on a journey which takes him through a startling situation leaving the audience in peals of laughter.

While coming to Punjab from London, Jassi meets Meet (Sonakshi Sinha) and love happens! Twist of fate and series of incidents take him to her house where he faces the most unexpected. He comes within an arm’s distance of his worst enemy ever- the heavy weight Billu Paji (Sanjay Dutt) who is also the head of Meet’s family. Jassi has been clueless of this feud that had started three generations ago between his family and Billu Paji’s family. Billu Paji had sworn to kill the next surviving member of Jassi’s family, twenty five years back. He is a man of words, has a track record of killing 49 people & Jassi is the potential fiftieth victim in line. Hell breaks loose as Billu Paji finds out Jassi’s parentage. Jassi too gets an inkling of the peril he is stuck into but thanks to another big fat belief system he finds a saving grace. Billu Paji and his family strictly adhere to Atithi Devo Bhavah! A guest at home is to be treated like God even if he is their worst enemy, outside the premise of the house- only God can help them!

A situation- a trap- catch 22- our dear Jassi tries to find defense. Safety guaranteed inside and Billu Paji with his henchmen of 25 butchers waiting outside. Sad plight…running away from his enemies will prove costlier than staying with them. Staying with them is also not so bad, after all, Meet brings love into his life and its Meet’s house too.  To be or not to be is the question?

A cat and mouse game begins, Jassi tries by all means to stay put, while Billu Paji wants to fish him out. Confusion, drama, comedy and craze reach a crescendo with never seen before action sequences.

Will enmity end or crazy slaughtering continues? Will the peace loving Jassi, quench Billu’s raging desire for revenge through this comedy of layers? Will Meet and Jassi’s love story see a happy ending?

A very urban film, Son of Sardar is a family entertainer where you can’t help but love the characters. It promises entertainment to one and all.

Ajay Devgn's Punjabi Tadka, perfect for the Diwali Palate

By MovieTalkies.com, 13 November 2012 3.5 / 5

Son Of Sardaar Review In Short:
A young man's love story and life gets threatened in a hilarious way due to an age-old blood feud.

Son Of Sardaar Review Verdict:
Though the story is novel and interesting with enough humour for dollops of entertainment, one feels the screenplay and the execution could have been better.

Son Of Sardaar Review Story Plot:
Jassi Randhawa (Ajay Devgn) is a happy-go-lucky Sikh, who stays in London, advises younger Sikhs about the ill-effects of smoking and bashes up leather jacket clad goons at pubs. However, Jassi is forced to return back to his hometown in Punjab to take care of his ancestral property.

On his way back, he meets and falls for Sukh (Sonakshi Sinha), who incidentally is the sister of Billu (Sanjay Dutt), who along with his brothers has sworn to kill Jassi due to an age-old blood feud between the two families. However, there is a loophole… it seems that Jassi cannot be killed as long as he is in Billu's house due to a custom that a guest is like a God and cannot be harmed as long as he is within the threshold. What follows is a hilarious ride as Jassi tries his best to stay within the house to save himself whereas Billu tries his best to get him out of the house so he can kill him.

Does Jassi get killed? Or does he manage to melt Billu's heart and manage to get married to Sukh? The only way to find that out is by watching 'Son Of Sardaar'.

Son Of Sardaar Review Performances:
Though Ajay Devgn doesn't look the stereotypical Sikh, his versatile acting abilities and his terrific comic timing come to his rescue. Veteran Sanjay Dutt also delivers, and Sonakshi Sinha pulls off her part quite well and it is not difficult to imagine her as a typically loud and boisterous Punjabi kudi. Surprisingly enough, actors Mukul Dev and Vindu Dara Singh, who have not been seen on the silver screen for quite some time, manage to elicit some laughs with their antics as Billu's simpleton cousins. However, it is Juhi Chawla as the chirpy Parminder, who proves that the endearing qualities that made her a darling of movie-goers many years back, is still intact.

Son Of Sardaar Review Direction:
Without a doubt, the story is quite interesting but the execution could have been better. Though the film has its share of humour to keep you entertained, the screenplay is a bit predictable. The love story that develops between Jassi and Sukh doesn't seem convincing and the climax too doesn't impress (for all his talks about the decades-old vengeance, Sanjay's character seems to melt and relent in minimal time following a couple of dialogues). Last but not least, the action sequences are too gravity-defying (even South flicks don't thumb their noses at Isaac Newton so insolently!).

Son Of Sardaar Review Music:
With the soulful 'Bichadann', the foot-tapping title track 'Son Of Sardaar' and the catchy 'Po Po song', this entertainer does have good music.

Son Of Sardaar Review Final Word:
As far as pure entertainment goes, the film delivers on its promise of SOS size entertainment. If you are in the habit of looking for logic in the script, maybe you should try your luck elsewhere.

'Son Of Sardaar' - Punjabi Overdose

By Reflections, MovieTalkies.com, 04 October 2012 2.5 / 5

Son Of Sardaar is all set to be a big Diwali entertainer to come out this year. As expected, masses are looking forward to the Ajay Devgn starrer who is a constant contestant at this time of the year. As his earlier movies, everyone expects even the music to be dhamaal which adds on to the celebrations. To get the right music, Himesh Reshammiya has been the chosen one with Sajid-Wajid and Sandeep Chowta as the guest composers. Sameer, Shabbir Ahmed, Irshad Kamil, Manoj Yadav and Ashwni Dhir are the lyricists.

Album begins with the title track Son of Sardaar which opens in Ajay Devgn's voice. A fairly addictive track, it grows on you (along with the 'remix version') with funny picturisation adding to the appeal. Aman Trikha and Himesh Reshammiya have given their vocals and done an apt job.

Rani Tu Mein Raja is run of the mill stuff which reminds you of the era of David Dhawan movies where music from films like Judwaa and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi scored. This one has a Punjabi flavour to it as well and is suitably rendered by Mika Singh and Bhavya Pandit. Similar rhythm continueswith 'Po Po'. Vikas Bhalla and Aman Trikha have tried to give it an authentic Punjabi touch and they have been fairly successful too. However one must add that the song does not have the capability to become a chartbuster. There is also a 'remix version' added to the album.

Punjabi flavour continues with Tu Kamaal Di Kudi where Vineet Singh and Mamta Sharma have come together behind the mike. They have managed to catch the finer nuances but still the end result is a little lacklustre and music is not good enough to be remembered for long. By this time a listener can make out that the idea behind these compositions was to mainly keep the tempo high and the mood upbeat without really aiming at something that stays on to be impressive in a long run as well.

Meanwhile Ajay Devgn opens the song Bichadan with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan taking it forward. Sameer's lyrics are soulful while Rahat's singing reminds one of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his melancholic singing. This is one song where Himesh has indeed scored while the 'reprise version' too stays with you. No wonder, Himesh has given his best here with Rahat's voice creating the kind of magic which can be felt by the listener.

Yeh Jo Halki Halki Khumariya is the next track by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan where Sajid-Wajid make an entry through this experimental composition. This track surprises the listener since it's an experimental fusion number with a Sufi base to it. However it is this very experiment that ends up resulting in an average outing since the song would have been more effective if only it was left to be authentically Sufi. Yes, Rahat does try to save the track but loud music in the name of fusion proves to be a dampener.

Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein (Funk Version) is the track with which Sandeep Chowta makes an entry into the album. As the name suggests, it has funky music, completely Chowta style. He has used Ajay Devgn to sing orrecite, who has done a great job. Even Ashwni Dhir's lyrics are funny and justified. Lyrics help in communicating the mood and theme of the movie. There is also a 'House Track Trance' version and though it has added arrangements and experiments, the original stays on to be better.

Over all, the message is loud and clear that the album belongs to Sardaars, as conveyed by oodles of Punjabi music. However, one does feel at time that there has been an overdose of that which makes one a little doubtful of the album would cut through all segments of audience across the country. Hopefully the Diwali celebrations and an overall happy atmosphere would make audience lap this one up.

Kingsize Entertainment....Perfect Festive Movie....

Ajay Devgn should be lauded for taking risks like this. What risk? Well releasing a film with another film having much more hype is nothing less than a risk, especially when the movie he is taking up a risk with is also a mega budget movie. One really good thing about him is that he is confident about his work. Last time in 2009, he exhibited his confidence on his work while releasing his home production All The Best with Blue,a film with much more buzz and became triumphant. Here too 3 years later despite of knowing that the bigger movie Jab Tak Hai Jaan would release on the same date and later would undoubtedly get a much bigger release, he decided to release SOS on the same day. Well Ajay has all the rights to be confident. SOS delivers what it promises, ENTERTAINMENT....and that's why this Diwali bonanza works and how!!!... With a story inspired from the 1923 silent film Our Hospitality and with lots and lots of desi tadka SOS makes it for a perfect festive movie. The khandani dushmani between the families of Ajay and Sanjay and the rivaaj in Sanjay's home of treating their guests as God creates ample of situations in the movie which justify the comic elements and the breath-taking action juxtaposed in the screenplay. Director Ashwini Dhir who also happens to be the writer of the movie along with Robin Bhatt ensures that the viewers are engrossed throughout. In fact there's not even a single dull moment in the movie. That shows how well the writers have done their job. The only unconvincing part in the movie is that its not made clear that when does Sonakshi's character actually starts falling for Ajay's character. But since the screenplay(Ashwini Dir-Robin Bhatt)is fast paced, you don't get time to ponder over all these. Special mention should be given to the choreographer Ganesh Acharya who makes Ajay dance like never before and also to the stunt director Jai Singh Nijjar who actually makes the action look larger than life. Well Done!!! Music of the SOS by none other than Himesh Reshammiya works big time. All songs are melodious and gel very well with the movie. Ajay Devgn does a fantabulous job as Jassi, the Son of Sardaar. Very well he portrays the role which has emotion-action ka bhandaar along with the comedy. As far as his action sequences are concerned he actually does all the death defying over the top actions like a true mastero. Incredible.... Sanjay Dutt is again immensely likeable. You will love the scenes between him and Ajay. He looks the part he plays and gives a sparkling performance. Sonakshi Sinha is endearing especially when she says Chal Jhoota. She does a great job as the vintage Punjab di soni kudi. Juhi Chawla playing Sanjay Dutt's muhboli biwi is bubbly. Its great to see her in a meaty role which she makes it look non-replaceable. Mukul Dev and Vindu Dara Singh are like pleasant surprises. They manage to shine in their respective roles and help in bringing the house down. Tanuja is also superb as bebbe..Salman Khan's guest appearance is well injected. On the whole Son of Sardaar is a movie which has everything to please the family viewers and the masses this festive season. It is one movie which actually defines how a festive movie should be. Go...have a great time with SOS....
