Barfi! Review In Short
A mute-deaf young man's journey through life, love and heart-break…

Barfi! Review Verdict
One of the most visually appealing movies this year, Barfi! tends to touch an emotional chord too..

Barfi! Review Story Plot
Murphy (Ranbir Kapoor) is a cheerful mute-deaf young man who stays in Darjeeling and is the darling of everyone, except a harassed cop (Saurabh Shukla) who has his hands full with the pranks and mischief that the young man unleashes with a roguish charm. One day, love walks in the idyllic town of Darjeeling in the form of Shruti (Ileana D'Cruz) and Murphy (or 'Barfi' as he is called), falls heels over head in love with her. However, even as his love story is headed for disaster, there is hope for a second chance at love in the form of Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra), an autistic girl from a rich family, who stays in the same town and seems to have formed a unique bond with Murphy. How the young man deals with these situations with a smile on his face is what the movie is all about

Barfi! Review Performances
Without a doubt, Barfi! is Ranbir's best performance till date. His Chaplinesque body language, his charming smile and the way he emotes through his eyes, is bound to impress one and all, especially the ladies, who would want to hug him tightly and never let go. On her part, Priyanka Chopra, who plays the autistic Jhilmil, has outdone herself with this movie and though her role is quite short as compared to that of Ranbir, Piggy Chops, as she is fondly known, simply wins you over with her child-like innocence and her puppy-like devotion to Murphy. Ileana D'Cruz, who makes her Bollywood debut with this movie, too is not a novice in the emoting department and the doe-eyed beauty manages to hold her own quite effectively.

Barfi Review Direction
At the outset, this reviewer would like to mention that Barfi! is one of the most visually appealing movies seen in a long, long time. Basu, who makes the movie flow like a beautiful poetry, has taken efforts to capture the old world charm of Darjeeling and Kolkata in the 1970s and the cinematography is simply…awesome! The movie has a fresh look to it and the humour, drama and the suspense element, which springs up in the second half of the movie, is sure to hold your interest without letting go at any point of time.

Most importantly, credit goes to Basu for not making his characters evoke sympathy. Murphy might be deaf and mute, but he is a charming rascal, who gets his way with a twinkle in his eyes…Jhilmil might be autistic, but she is so happy in her own world that you might almost envy her for it!

Barfi! Review Music
Composed by Pritam, the music of this movie is as melodious as can get with gems like Ala Barfi!, Aashiyan, Phir Le Aaya Dil, Saawali Si Raat, Kyon and Main Kya Karoon

Barfi! Review Final Word
Without doubt, Barfi! is one of the finest films made this year and is a must watch for people from all age groups!

Barfi! - A Tremendous Charismatic Soundtrack

By Reflection, MovieTalkies.com, 05 September 2012 4 / 5

Too much of Barfi! (Sweet) is not at all good for health but here is an album which would make you healthy with more sweetness of voice, music and lyrics - a complete package. With Pritam, the magician who created something fantastic with his last endeavor Cocktail just a few weeks ago; brings his new tricks which are equally entertaining. This album is a unique work as it takes you to the other world that is far from the noisy hustle-bustle where we live. A soulful and relaxing outing, this one has director Anurag Basu, Pritam and accomplished lyricists Neelesh Misra, Sayeed Quadri, Swanand Kirkire and Ashish Pandit coming together as a team that does everything right.

Beautiful arrangement of the mouth organ starts Aashiyan which sketches the era of early 60s. This track reflects a carefree attitude while reminding of the fact that even small happiness means a lot in life. Rainbow of melody in vocals of Shreya Ghoshal and Nikhil Paul George sees special colors being added by lyricist Swanand Kirkire.

It has been long since a ghazal found its valuable and justified place in an album and this has actually happened in the next track Phir Le Aaya Dil. This perfect ghazal focuses on high vocal quality and minimal musical arrangements. Pritam has experimented with his styling while Rekha Bhardwaj creates an aura of her own while rendering this ghazal that is put to words by Sayeed Quadri. The 'reprise version' in the mesmerizing vocals of Arijit Singh only turns out to be an added bonus.

The album moves ahead with Saawali Si Raat which is a sweet melody in the splendor vocals of Arijit Singh. The music is spellbinding as it invites you to close your eyes and feel each and every word. Pritam's experimental whispers are coupled strongly with equally pleasant lyrics by Swanand Kirkire.

One can pretty much start whistling with the next track Ala Barfi! that has been rendered by Swanand Kirkire himself. It has been portrayed as a theme track which showcases naughty, bubbly, carefree and above all, avery happy Barfi!. Few notes seems to be inspired by Kishore Kumar's majestic track Jhumru which goes very well with this jhumru - Barfi!. Lyrics by Swanand are amazing as these are simple yet captivating which justify the central character. The same track has been recreated in the vocals of Mohit Chauhan who continues his hit association with Ranbir from the days of Rockstar. This track scores a point over the first version.

The next track Kyon is a duet in the vocals of Papon and Sunidhi Chauhan which certainly carries you to the far away planet that promises tremendous fun. All dimensions of this track are just perfect. Moreover, this soft creation of Pritam has a lot of credit to share with lyricist Neelesh Misra too as he paints the kind of poetry as never heard before.

The album ends with the track Main Kya Karoon which is a solo in the fantastic vocals of Nikhil Paul George who brings in certain charm of youth and freshness. Lyrics penned by Ashish Pandit are meaningful and are further lifted by Nikhil who experiments with the variations that he brings in.

Overall, Barfi! is a music charisma by Pritam that will rock the music charts for the coming months. Music in the album seems to have a touch of inspiration from the yesteryear scores. Meanwhile, Pritam and Anurag have shown their interest in versatility as they paint a new picture in Barfi! which is poles apart from their previous collaborations - Life In A Metro and Gangster.
