SOTY Review In Short
Two college lads are pitted against each other in a high stakes game to win the prestigious college award and also the heart of the girl they both are in love with…
SOTY Review Verdict
Though the movie has its share of entertainment quotient; it also comes across as too unreal and cliched…
SOTY Review Story Plot
Abhimanyu Singh (
Siddharth Malhotra) is the new kid in a college full of rich brats and though Singh is a middle class scholarship student, he is not an underdog. Armed with a fierce ambition and an undying competitive streak, he is here to win it all- at whatever costs.
Pitted against him is Rohan Nanda (
Varun Dhawan), a rich business tycoon's kid, who roams around the campus in a Ferrari and has all the hottest chicks drooling over him and caught between them is Shanaya (
Alia Bhatt), whose heart is torn between the two.
Though Abhimanyu and Rohan become the best of buddies after some initial tension, their friendship turns bitter when the former falls for the latter's girl Shanaya. The two campus warriors are now pitted against each other and how their quest for success affects everything around them is what director
Karan Johar has dealt with in the movie.
SOTY Review Performances
Newbies Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan do have an undeniable screen presence, though the latter shows more promise. On her part, Alia Bhatt is something of a let-down and the bimbo-ish character that she plays only adds to the disappointment. As always, the veteran
Rishi Kapoor is a delight to watch, though the same cannot be said for another newbie and Boman Irani's son
Kayoze Irani (the apple has fallen far from the tree, we must say).
SOTY Review Direction
If there is one word to define the way the movie has been directed, it would be- unreal. The college brats roam around in imported cars and even the so called 'middle class sports scholarship' student Abhimanyu Singh is seen strutting in designer threads and cool glares. Of course, it being a Karan Johar movie, the college cafeteria is swankier than a five star restaurant and the kids seem to do everything but study in the college. What works for the film its share of campus humour, the thrilling sporting events and the overall easy on the eye visuals. Fans of KJo will surely enjoy this one but as for the rest, we can't really recommend this fare.
SOTY Review Music
With songs like Radha, Ratta Maar, Disco Deewane and others, the music of the film is peppy, yuppie and fun. However, the movie does have one song too many and might seem like watching 'Glee' in Hindi.
SOTY Review Final Word
If you are a Karan Johar fan looking for some campus romance, do go for
Student Of The Year…The rest will have to take their chances, we guess
