Student Of The Year SYNOPSIS

The road from youth to adulthood is paved with myriad emotions and Student Of The Year celebrates this colorful coming of age. It is the story of Abhimanyu Singh (Sidharth Malhotra) and Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) who traverse the path of competition, envy, triumph, failure, manipulation and heartbreak in their mini-universe of St. Teresa’s High School, Dehradun.

Abhimanyu Singh a.k.a  Abhi comes from a middle-class family and wants to achieve great heights of success and prosperity, the first step to which will be the Student of the Year trophy while Rohan Nanda a.k.a Ro, is the son of a business tycoon who grapples with a complex relationship with his father and knows that winning the Student Of the Year trophy will bag him the approval that he subconsciously craves for. When the two protagonists with distinct backgrounds and clear goals clash with each other in the locker room, football field and the canteen, there is no question in anyone’s mind that the preset equations of the St.T’s campus were about to change.

Student Of The Year REVIEWS

Karan Johar's Candyfloss Campus Romance

By MovieTalkies.com, 19 October 2012 3 / 5

SOTY Review In Short
Two college lads are pitted against each other in a high stakes game to win the prestigious college award and also the heart of the girl they both are in love with…

SOTY Review Verdict
Though the movie has its share of entertainment quotient; it also comes across as too unreal and cliched…

SOTY Review Story Plot
Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra) is the new kid in a college full of rich brats and though Singh is a middle class scholarship student, he is not an underdog. Armed with a fierce ambition and an undying competitive streak, he is here to win it all- at whatever costs.

Pitted against him is Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan), a rich business tycoon's kid, who roams around the campus in a Ferrari and has all the hottest chicks drooling over him and caught between them is Shanaya (Alia Bhatt), whose heart is torn between the two.

Though Abhimanyu and Rohan become the best of buddies after some initial tension, their friendship turns bitter when the former falls for the latter's girl Shanaya. The two campus warriors are now pitted against each other and how their quest for success affects everything around them is what director Karan Johar has dealt with in the movie.

SOTY Review Performances
Newbies Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan do have an undeniable screen presence, though the latter shows more promise. On her part, Alia Bhatt is something of a let-down and the bimbo-ish character that she plays only adds to the disappointment. As always, the veteran Rishi Kapoor is a delight to watch, though the same cannot be said for another newbie and Boman Irani's son Kayoze Irani (the apple has fallen far from the tree, we must say).

SOTY Review Direction
If there is one word to define the way the movie has been directed, it would be- unreal. The college brats roam around in imported cars and even the so called 'middle class sports scholarship' student Abhimanyu Singh is seen strutting in designer threads and cool glares. Of course, it being a Karan Johar movie, the college cafeteria is swankier than a five star restaurant and the kids seem to do everything but study in the college. What works for the film its share of campus humour, the thrilling sporting events and the overall easy on the eye visuals. Fans of KJo will surely enjoy this one but as for the rest, we can't really recommend this fare.

SOTY Review Music
With songs like Radha, Ratta Maar, Disco Deewane and others, the music of the film is peppy, yuppie and fun. However, the movie does have one song too many and might seem like watching 'Glee' in Hindi.

SOTY Review Final Word
If you are a Karan Johar fan looking for some campus romance, do go for Student Of The Year…The rest will have to take their chances, we guess

'Student Of The Year' - Go, have fun!

By Reflection, MovieTalkies.com, 05 September 2012 3.5 / 5

Karan Johar's Student of the Year is one of the most awaited movies of the year as the ace director has decided to come back behind the camera years after My Name Is Khan. He has taken the big gamble of not casting his favourites, whether it's Shah Rukh Khan or Kajol, and instead brought in three newcomers -Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Malhotra. He has also moved from his usual themes of much mature subjects to something which is very youthful and trendy. Since it's a deviation from his old self, even the music composers have been decided keeping in mind the pulse of the new generation. Vishal-Shekhar have been roped in to give the music and in their trademark style they have lent a very enthusiastic and full-of-life music.

One would not have found a better beginning than The Disco Song for this youth friendly movie. It is a chartbuster material from the composers. Benny Dayal and Sunidhi Chauhan vocals are well synchronized with an addition of a blast from the past, Nazia Hassan, who is heard again crooning Disco Deewane. Pulsating and foot tapping, the track is an easy hit that would be played in parties and discotheques. This track has some masterstroke set pieces, first being the one which has been heard in the trailer as well that would definitely stay on with the listener. Secondly is the entry of 'Ishq Wala Love' which gives the song a twist in the end and makes it different. This one is a sure shot winner.

Ishq Wala Love takes over completely after an introduction in the earlier song. It begins with the strumming of guitar and has single drumbeat as a base throughout the track, which gives it a different texture. Neeti Mohan, Salim Merchant and Shekhar Ravjiani give voice to the three protagonists in this love triangle. It is a soft romantic ballad which is very soothing to ears and will definitely grow on listeners.

Kukkad fulfils the requirement of Punjabi track in a Karan Johar movie. Track opens with the voice of a rooster and later has Shahid Mallya taking over. It seems like a situational track which would perhaps introduce one of the male leads in the movie. Lyrics are a mix of Punjabi, English and Hindi while being catchy. Song, if picturised well, might turn out be interesting enough to be watch on the big screen.

The opening of Radha might fool listeners for a bit since it seems as if the album has taken an about turn. Shreya Ghoshal opens the number with her melodious classical rendition. However the pace suddenly picks up and you are back to the familiar young world. The tune is upbeat with Hinglish lyrics and is a jamboree between the protagonists. Male vocalists i.e. Shekhar Ravjiani and Vishal Dadlani, add on to this funky track. Towards the end of the song there is a surprise entry of Udit Narayan, which gives it the final touch.

A big part of college life is studies, even in a Karan Johar movie. Many would agree that in India, cramming (or Ratta) is a familiar concept in school and college years. It is exemplified by the next track Ratta Maar. The Ratta phenomenon is very close to every college going student's heart and Anvita Dutt Guptan has captured the same beautifully in her lyrics. Shefali Alvarez with Vishal's voice communicates the frustrated feeling in the most light-hearted manner. This song would definitely remind many of their college going days and they would relate to it.

If previous song would remind listeners of one aspect part of the college life, Vele would definitely take you back to the days of college fests. You can easily go and have fun and masti on the dance floor while the song is on. A Punjabi fusion track which would be a hit amongst the youth, it also gives an impression of the arrival of a male lead with flashy cars and all the money in the world to splurge. Though this song, Shekhar and Vishal have managed to bring on all the fun that they usually create on stage in live performances. This one is close to their other power packed performances.

Last to arrive in the album is Mashup of the Year song. As the name suggests, it is a cocktail of all the songs in the album. A good fusion number, it is an interesting experimental piece.

Overall, Student of the Year is an album for the youth and has all the ingredients like fun and 'masti' to add to the story. However it is also very different from other Karan Johar scores. It is not timeless like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai or melodious like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gum or even passionate like Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. As youth is not forever and is just a phase, even the music reminds one of the same. It is for today and for now and nothing beyond that. Nonetheless, music goes with the script and feel of the movie and will most definitely add to the texture. Go, have fun!
