Gulaab Gang REVIEWS

All About Madhuri And Juhi

By Joginder Tuteja, MovieTalkies.com, 08 March 2014 3 / 5

The animation sequence at the beginning of the film sets the stage for Gulaab Gang. While the expectation is pretty much set that this is going to be a dramatic outing with action interspersing the narrative, you know as an audience that what follows next would be in line with what the promos of this Anubhav Sinha backed film had suggested.

The film comes to the point straight away with the introduction of Gulaab Gang. It is a different world out there and though one can sense Madhuri Dixit's presence for a while, she is unveiled - well, literally, in a well set scene at a government office. Her modus operandi being well established, you know that 'Rod is God' in the dictionary of Madhuri and her gang members. If there is no resolution in sight with 'baat', the gang resorts to laat and laathi, which time and again pays.

Of course at times you do wonder if it is actually that simple for Rajjo [Madhuri] and her gang to be unchallenged, considering the number of people around her that turn into her enemies. Her gang maims people, takes on cops, walk away insulting politicians, kicks goons, challenges administrations and yet, is more often than not unscathed despite no help whatsoever from anyone, be it an insider or an outsider.

However, this could well be a cinematic liberty taken by first time director Soumik Sen who basically focuses the film on three pointers - Education for women, their empowerment and the power game. With Madhuri's character being shown as supporter for anyone who can ensure the first two (she is even willing to support politicians for that), when it comes to the third, she even takes on the reigning politician (Juhi Chawla) heads on.

It is this very factor that leads to some good confrontations that ensure that Gulaab Gang has many moments where you actually sit up and take notice of what proceeds on screen. Right from the introduction scene of Juhi where she doesn't spare a cop who refuses to touch her feet, the veteran actress is projected as an opportunist politician who believes in being friends with ‘time’ than real people. At times one is disgusted with her while at other times you are simply amused with the manner in which plays her game.

Boasts Of Earthiness And Indianness

By Nishevitha Vijayanand, MovieTalkies.com, 19 February 2014 3 / 5

Producer Anubhav Sinha manages a casting coup by bringing together two of the top leading ladies of the 90s, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla with Gulaab Gang which also happens to be the directorial vehicle of debutante Director / Music Composer Soumik Sen. Lyrics for the film has been penned by Neha Saraf with Shreya Narayan and Soumik Sen contributing with one song each. Despite the casting coup that has surely piqued audience’s interest in Gulaab Gang, expectations are balanced. With its rural setting and a debutante music composer, it is surely untested waters for the listener. And it is up to this Director cum Music Composer to make full use of this golden opportunity and leave a mark not just musically but even otherwise in the audience’s minds.

The title track Gulaabi opens the soundtrack and immediately sets the tone of this album. Anthemic in nature and sung rousingly by Shilpa Rao and Malabika Brahma, this one leaves quite an impression on the listener. Neha Saraf’s lyrics sings paeans about women empowerment and are quite impactful. Composer Soumik Sen scores with this delightful track, the Sarod interlude especially is a masterstroke! A superb start to the album indeed!

Dheemi Dheemi si can best be described as a musical duel between the lead artistes. Providing the vocal firepower for this phataka of a number is Malabika Brahma (yet again) along with Kaushiki Chakrabarty who incidentally steals the thunder with her amazing rendition. This classical - folk fusion track starts on a slow note but gathers momentum as it progresses and Neha Saraf’s lyrics have the desired impact. Soumik Sen’s composition might not enjoy much success at the popularity charts but should surely complement the storyline and have a much better impact on the big screen.

Malabika Brahma makes it three in a row with Sharm Laaj which can be loosely tagged as an “Item Number.” Along with Pavni Pandey, Malabika belts out Shreya Narayan’s teasing lyrics with aplomb. But the same cannot be said about Soumik Sen’s composition which is just about average and just does not have enough firepower in it to make a lasting impression in the listener’s minds.

Gulaab Gang TRIVIA

Director Soumik Sen wanted the break the ice between the two leading ladies of his film Gulaab Gang and he thought of an idea. He asked Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla to come to a hotel room and locked them in the room for an hour and asked them to sort out their differences. Both of them came out with a smile and the director knew that he had broken the ice between them.
