Luck By Chance SYNOPSIS

The fantasy sellers and the devoted audience, the insane love for Cinema mixed with the eccentric notion of divinity and archaic beliefs; these are the contradictions that keep this world spinning. The stark reality of living in India juxtaposed with the fantastical world depicted on screen suddenly begins to make sense... Sona arrives in Bombay with her dreams of becoming a film star. Wide eyed but ambitious, she does whatever it takes, to make it. She lives on her own in a rented apartment - a luxury for most in this bustling city and spends her time with a motley crew of loyal friends whose lives are also entwined with Bollywood, each one in search of a bigger dream. Vikram has just moved to the City leaving the comforts of his parents Delhi Home. He is a mover, he is used to getting what he wants and is smart enough to know when to demand it and when to manipulate it. He is young and handsome, and full of promise. Sona begins to enjoy Vikram’s attention and affections; they develop a romantic relationship. Rolly is a successful though superstitious producer who only works with the biggest stars. He is making a potential blockbuster launching the nubile Nikki Khurana, the 18-year-old daughter of 70's superstar, Neena. The hero of the film, Zaffar Khan, is Rolly’s favorite superstar. He was launched by Rolly and went on to become a huge draw at the box office. The wheels of fate indeed continue to spin favorably for Vikram, as elsewhere in the industry, havoc spreads on the sets of producer Rommy Rolly's new film. Vikram is called in for an audition and uses this opportunity to the fullest. The film is about a slice of Bollywood life, in which Kismet plays a huge role. Here, notions of superstition, fate and destiny underline every life, as grand desires and opportunity converge to form strange patterns. In such an unpredictable climate is success and failure what others define for you or is it something you decide for yourself. Luck By Chance is a contemporary tale set in a world desperate to escape its own reality.

A Superb Debut By Zoya!

By MovieTalkies, 30 January 2009 4 / 5

Zoya Akhtar's much awaited directorial debut is finally ready for public consumption, and the wait seems to have been worth it. The debutante has managed to capture, with brutal honesty and sharpness, the functioning of the Hindi film industry, stopping just short of making a caricature out of events and characters, which speaks a lot for her control over her subject and the film's content. While, in a sense, there is little about the industry that those on the outside do not know in these days of 24x7 media coverage, but the director still manages to spin a poignant and yet brutally honest tale about the angst of a struggler and the workings of the industry. In a certain sense, Luck By Chance is also a coming of age film. It is about growing up, looking at life anew and moving on, just as the female protagonist Sona does at the end of the movie. Zoya's film begins with Vikram Jaisingh's (Farhan Akhtar) struggle to become an actor and ends with Sona's (Konkona Sen Sharma) coming of age. Both their paths cross each other for a while, each enrapt in their personal struggle to touch the stars. For a while the two manage to share their dreams and aspirations together, but luck was not on their side. Luck, maybe by chance, gives Vikram one of the biggest breaks possible and he soon finds himself being launched by one of the leading banners of B town, cast opposite the daughter of one of the leading divas of the silver screen. All too soon, he learns to play the survival game, driven by his ambition to become someone. And in his journey towards stardom, he dumps his junior artiste girlfriend as he charms his way into his heroine's (Isha Sharvani), and her mother's (Dimple Kapadia) heart. The film encapsulates Vikram's journey towards stardom and ends with him having reached his destination. But as a superstar tells him, Shah Rukh Khan, playing himself, his journey from now on becomes even more perilous as his future success would depend on the kind of roles that he chooses henceforth. His first role, akin to his destiny, chose him, and now it is his turn. Vikram makes his way back to Sona, but she seems to have grown up somewhere in this time spent apart. Already having had her share of disappointments in her career and her personal life, she has managed to pick herself up and move on. There is something endearing about Sona's gritty courage behind her vulnerable façade. A true survivor, film ends with her making her way to Film City for a shoot. The ambitious Vikram has realised by now, that his new found stardom is just the beginning of another journey, one that he embarks on, with full knowledge about himself and his choices. Zoya does a brilliant take on the film industry, its producers, its wannbe directors, superstars, their tantrums and the exploitation of aspiring young actresses, like Sona Mishra from Kanpur. The depiction, like we said earlier, stops short of being a caricature. She presents the world just as it is, flaws and warts included. And like Sona Mishra, in the end, one ends up loving the world. Zoya displays a certain sharpness, in the manner in which she narrows down on detail. Nothing seems to escape her eye. The first half of the movie unfolds at a leisurely pace as the film takes its time to introduce the cast of characters and the inner working of their mind. But it soon picks up pace as the events in the life of its characters gather momentum. One of the most brilliant characters in this movie, is that of the ambitious Punjabi producer, Rolliji, played by Rishi Kapoor. The veteran actor really infuses his character with so much colour and energy, that he steals the scene from everybody whenever he is around. The actor is believed to have taken great interest in his character and even worked on the character's styling, very closely with the director. He is a marvel to watch. Despite playing it over the top as the exuberant loud Punjabi producer, Rishi manages to draw that invisible line and never lets his character become a caricature. The difference is his serious approach towards his character and the manner in which he layers it with mannerisms of speech and movement. He is very well supported by Juhi Chawla, who plays his wife and Sheeba Chaddha, who plays the wife's sister. Aly Khan as the brother in law, too puts in a good performance. Sanjay Kapoor surprises with his performance as a wannabe director. But the surprise packet is definitely Hrithik Roshan. The actor does a cameo as Zafar, the reigning superstar, and comes out tops. In the little time that he comes on screen, he is absolutely fantastic. He proves again, njot that he needs to, what a great dancer he is in the song, ‘Baawre'. But the most enduring image of him in the movie, is the look in his eye as he looks at Vikram, the new star on the horizon, who may well be his competitor. Actor Aamir Khan appears for a scene as do the likes of Abhishek Bachchan, Akshaye Khanna, Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor, Karan Johar, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, among others. Coming to the main cast, Farhan gives another muted yet passionate performance as the ambitious Vikram Jaisingh, who does not mind playing psychological games or indulge in a little flattery, or flirtation, if it can get him what it wants. He is ruthless. The character has its grey tinge and Farhan does an excellent job of playing out the various hues shades in Vikram and making him a character one can relate to. Konkona digs her teeth into the character of Sona Mishra as well and renders a powerful performance. She manages to capture the naivete and innocence of a small town girl, who dares to follow her dreams. The film is just as much about Vikram Jaising as it is about Sona Mishra and Konkona does full justice to her role with her very natural and easy style of acting. Last but not the least, Dimple Kapadia as the aging diva, is just about perfect for her role. Isha Sharwani too is very well cast. Seeing that Zoya has written the film herself, one has to admit that she has done a superb job, in the manner in which she created the various characters and the situations in the film. The manner in which she has worked in the destiny factor in her screenplay too is creditworthy. By no means does this film come across as one made by a debutant. Zoya has managed to see her film so well and s clearly in her screenplay and script, that she has managed to do 50 per cent of her work. Because the film has been so well conceived of, it has been so brilliantly executed. The film's camerawork, its music, its editing have all come together to add value to the movie. This has truly been a debut worth its wait.

Shankar Ehsaan Loy Rock on!

By MovieTalkies, 24 January 2009 4 / 5

Coming close on the heels of their musical score of Rock On, the team of Shankar Ehsaan Loy come out with yet another scintillating score in Zoya Akhtar's debut directorial movie, Luck By Chance. The best thing about this trio is that they always have something new to offer and the fact that they are constantly pushing their boundaries. They team up with Javed Akhtar, yet again, for this film and compose six numbers, each of which stands out for its unique musical quality. The album begins with the number 'Yeh Zindahi Bhi', which has been sung by Shekhar Ravijani of the Vishal-Shekhar fame and Loy Mendonca. The number has Shekhar pitching it really softly for a number that is very reflective in mood. It has a soft feel to it and Shekhar excels in conveying the mood very successfully. The next number on the album is 'Baawre' which is a fusion track, where rustic Rajasthani folk elements have been tweaked with a Western flavour. Like the previous number, this number too is very catchy, though the mood is much more exuberant. Giving voice to the number are Shankar Mahadevan along with Loy Mendonca and the Rajasthani ensemble comprising of Ila Arun, Mumay Khan, Babu Khan, Manzoor Khan and Rajab Khan. The number begins with a beautiful alaap before moving into a rhythmical rendering by the rest of the singers. The two elements have been so beautifully melded together in the song that there is nothing forced about it. The singers do a wonderful job as well. This number appears in a remixed avatar as well, which, however does not match the original. One could have done without it. 'Pyaar Ki Dastaan' sees Mahalaxmi Iyer and Amit Paul doing a wonderful job with this romantic number. Mahalaxmi has a wonderful girlish quality in her voice which serves the purpose of this song very well. Amit Paul also takes this opportunity to display his vocal prowess. Both are quite impressive in this duet. Note prefect. Sunidhi Chauhan comes into sing just one number, 'Yeh Aaj Kya ho Gaya', and she leaves her royal stamp on it. Nobody else but her could have sung the song with such ease and attitude. This is one of those feel-good kind of numbers. It has a sunny, exuberant mood and Sunidhi's powerful vocals are just right for it. One has to credit the music composers for picking on the just the right singer for each number. The next song sees a drastic change in mood with Shankar Mahadevan coming in to sing, 'Sapnon Se Bhare Naina'. This number too sees a kind of fusion between Indian classical and pop elements and who better than Shankar to render it. His hold on the classical medium is apparent once again as he enriches the number with a profuse use of sargams and renders it in the thumri style. This is another mellow, philosophic number which sparkles due to Shankar's superb vocal play. This number is probably the USP of this album. Shankar ends the album with the number 'O Rahi Re,' again a song which is pensive in tone. The hallmark of this album is not just the music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy but also the lyrics which have been penned by Javed Akhtar. There is a certain simplicity in each of the songs, and Akhtar does a marvelous job in being able to convey profound emotions and deep feelings with such utter simplicity. Each of the songs on this album reflect this rare gift of the poet. The album of Luck By Chance has a certain freshness to it which is absolutely endearing. It sounds different due to the composers, who have stretched themselves creatively, and given us an album which is unconventional, where Hindi film music is concerned, but yet so lilting and musically enriching. This is one of those albums which calls for repeated hearings. A great effort by the composers.
