Mission Istaanbul SYNOPSIS

Vikas Sagar would go anywhere for a scoop, risk his life and limb to get an exclusive story that nobody else can. It's for this precise reason Vikas is a familiar face watched by six million viewer's weeknights on TV 24. Ambitious, popular and professional, Vikas is considered one of the most promising journalists in the business. It's also the reason Owais Husain, a senior producer at the controversial Istanbulbased AL JOHARA, widely criticized as the mouthpiece of terrorists or as their network of choice, makes him an offer to head the channel's proposed Indian bureau for an outrageous salary and other perks. It's an offer he almost can't refuse because of the channel's controversial profile which ensures that it's seen by everyone globally, including the White House. It certainly would take Vikas's career to another level not only does he become the highest paid journalist in India but also puts him on an international platform. But there is one condition that the head hunters from AL JOHARA insist he must join ASAP and then fly to Istanbul for a three month orientation programme. Their offer couldn't have come at a better time for Vikas, who's undergoing a painful divorce with wife Anjali, an equally feisty journalist whose desire to have a baby leads to their separation because her husband wants her to wait a little longer and seems to be in no mood to start a family. While Al Johara dangles the temptation of kickstarting their India operations, Vikas accepts the offer largely to mend his broken heart. But little does Vikas know that his life is about to change when he takes the flight to Istanbul on a threemonth orientation program at the channel's headquarters. While Al Johara is one of the most viewed channels in the world, its reputation has been largely built as the mouthpiece of a dreaded terrorist. Abu Nazir, who is on the most wanted lists of both the Interpol and FBI, is vociferous in his threat to wage war against several countries, including India. A threat he usually delivers via a videotape to Al Johara. On the flight Vikas finds himself seated next to a stunningly beautiful copassenger who hates flying. Lisa Lobo is headed for Istanbul to attend a medical convention or so she claims. In her obvious discomfort, she turns to an amused Vikas for moral support and distraction from the reality of being airborne. It's a budding friendship that's grounded the moment the flight lands and Lisa disappears at the airport. Once in Istanbul, Vikas's initial impression of AL JOHARA is in sharp contrast to its notorious reputation. Especially when he meets the charismatic Ghazni, who has business interests all over the world but whose obsession these days is AL JOHARA as an instrument to shape world events. There is only one word of caution to Vikas and that's never ever to venture onto the 13th floor known as the Catacomb. As part of his orientation, Vikas gets handson experience in the AL JOHARA newsroom where he watches ghastly and exclusive news reports of terrorism. He learns more about Abu Nazir, who is described as "a oneman organization whose existence revolves around a single person." Vikas is told that it is extremely difficult to find out any details about his private life and his habits because such information would help the secret services who are looking for him. "Abu Nazir is cautious to the point of paranoia." Reeling under the impact of the reality bytes at work, Vikas's only relief is his flirtatious encounters with Lisa and the lively company of soldier turned journalist Owais Husain who is looking forward to quitting his job and settling down with his Irish girlfriend. But on an assignment to cover kidnapped journalists in one of Abu Nazir's terrorist camps in Afghanistan, Vikas is shocked when Abu Nazir's brother, Khalil, brutally executes Owais Hussain just before a UN peacekeeping force mounts a rescue operation. Reeling at this close encounter with terrorism and watching a brutal kill

Mission Istaanbul REVIEWS

Not Engrossing Enough

By MovieTalkies.com, 26 July 2008 2.5 / 5

After last year's Shootout At Lokhandwala, where he took a hard, gritty look at the underworld and encounters, director Apoorva Lakhia now turns his focus on terrorism. His intentions are absolutely great but there is just a slight issue with his latest film, Mission Istaanbul. The film has been well shot, the action scenes, which form the film's main fare, are quite stunning, but the film seems to lack an emotional core. There is no emotional underpinning to all the mayhem that is happening in the movie. Sure, he has characters, who have personal lives, but somehow, his characters do not seem to have any kind of an emotional core. Quite unlike his earlier Shootout At Lokhandwala, where one can still recall the emotions on the face of Maya Dola's mother played by Amrita Singh, during the Shootout. There were many such instances in that film. But Mission Istaanbul seems to have nothing to do with emotion. It is only about action, from the word go. So action lovers should enjoy all the stunts in the film. But the over emphasis on action just ends up making the film lop sided. Also, the story of the film is like any typical Hindi film, hardly credible, with the two main protagonists of the film, actually ending up destroying the entire terrorist network, singlehandedly. So, yes, this film also calls for suspending one's rational capacities. The film's story, in short, is about a top notch journalist, Vikas Sagar (Zayed Khan, all beefed up, with spectacles and all to give a serious look) who takes a break from his life and marriage in India to another journo, Anjali (Shreya Saran), and accepts an offer from a television channel based in Istaanbul, called Al Johara (based on the infamous Al Jazeera, it seems). It is headed by a man called Owais (Suniel Shetty), who is all too soon bumped off. The channel is actually a front for terrorist activities around the world. Vikas realizes that he is next on the line of fire when he meets up with a Turkish commando called Rizwan (Vivek Oberoi). Vikas and Rizwan then join forces and take on the might of the terrorists along with an Indian uncover agent, played by Shweta Bharadwaj. Apparently, the channel is responsible for all the terrorist activities, under the ownership of Nikitin Dheer, who plays a media baron. The first half of the film moves at quite a frenetic pace, with events happening very fast. The director literally zips through this half. The script unfolds fast, but with the result that a lot of the characters are not very well developed. One of them is the character of a terrorist played by Shabbir Aluwalia. The actor hardly has any scope to perform because of the poor fashion in which his role has been written. The first half establishes the characters and the premise of the plot. But in the second half, all we see is action, violence, chases etc. It seems as if the director has substituted his story for action. This is the half when the two protagonists take on the might of the terrorists and demolish them. But yes, the action is of top notch quality, no two ways about that. In fact, Lakhia really excels in his execution of these scenes, which are the hallmark of the film. Both the film's heroes, Vivek and Zayed do a very good job in this part of the movie. The cinematography of the film by Gururaj RJ is also of top quality. There are excellent shots of Istaanbul in the film. The film's music, which has been given by a motley band of composers, is fast paced and racy, like the film itself. The Abhishek Bachchan item number rocks, but it is not enough to salvage the film. As for the actors, they excel in the action department, but one can't quite say the same for their acting. One expected a lot more from Vivek Oberoi, who is known to be an explosive actor. But he probably did not have much scope in the film, to act and emote. Zayed appears in a new avatar as the beefed up journalist. But acting is not exactly his forte. But he too is excellent in the action sequences. Suniel Shetty is competent as usual. Nikitin Dheer does a very good job and stands out. Of the girls, Shweta Bhardwaj and Shreya Saran are good enough. But having said all of that, one comes away from the film, without carrying any enduring moment, anything which moves, touches or remains with one. The director has done a great job in handling the action and in the pace at which the action unfolds. But he fails in the story department. The additions of a George Bush look alike and the Bin Laden look alike do not add any credibility to the film. The flawed second half proves to be the film's undoing. Hence this mission fails to engross.

Action packed music

It seems to have become the wont of film directors these days to try out as many music directors as possible for their films. It is not unknown to find three or four composers giving music for a film as 'guest' composers. Director Apoorva Lakhia does the same for his film Mission Istanbul. He had previously done this for Shootout At Lokhandwala as well. The current album of Mission Istanbul has not one, but four music composers, beginning with Anu Malik, and then going on to Mika Singh, Shamir Tandon and newcomer Chirantan Bhatt. Maybe, that day isn't far away when an enterprising producer might decide to employ different directors for different portions of the film. But to come back to Mission Istanbul, it is feast of all kinds of sounds, all musical of course. The ones who acquit themselves really well are the veteran Anu Malik, newcomer Bhatt, and to an extend Mika. The album begins with Bhatt's Mission Mission, with lyrics by Hamza Faruqui, who also lends his vocals to the song. This opening song begins with a bang. This loud and energetic number literally sets the floor on fire. Humza literally blasts out this number. The high energy effect is maintained with the high octave music provided by the composer. The only problem is that the number tends to get a little too noisy in places. Otherwise a highly enjoyable number. Bhatt's next number on the album is 'Nobody Likes You' sung by Neeraj Sridhar, Anushka DJ Ishq Bector. This is a romantic number which has been penned by Humza and Bector. It carries that same high voltage feel to it along with some funky elements.. The remixed version of this song has even more tadka to it. 'Nobody Likes You' is a really peppy number and should go down well on the dance floors. Anu Malik makes his entry into the album with the number 'Jo Ghumshuda' sung by Shaan, Mahalakshmi Iyer and Ege. Malik continues his tryst with melody and delivers the best track of this album. This is a number which has been excellently written by Sameer and Ege and sung superbly by Shaan and Mahalaksmi. The number incorporates touches of Turkish music, the effect of which is enhanced by the use of Ege's voice. The remixed version too carries the same magic. It is the romantic number of this album and Malik is a master at invoking just the right mood with his deft handling of the music. Malik continues with the good work in the next number 'Yaar Mera Dildaara'. The song has been sung by Javed Ali and Sunidhi Chauhan and has been written by Sameer. Malik attempts a fusion here as well and excels in that department. The song has a certain soft poignancy about it which is brought out wonderfully by Javed Ali's vocals. Sunidhi is, as always, wonderful. She gets an opportunity in this number to use her vocals to their optimum. The third music composer Shamir Tandon makes his presence felt with the racy,'World Hold On' the lyrics of which have been written by Shabbir Ahmed. The number has been belted out by Kunal Ganjawala and his wife Gayatri Ganjawala, along with Raaj. Tandon makes full use of electronic sounds thus, giving the number a thumping, vigorous feel. The rest of the job is accomplished by the singers. Both Kunal and Gayatri excel in their rendition. The remixed version of this song remixed by DJ Nawed and Nikhil Chinappa, is even more pulsating than the original. Mika Singh, who had belted out the hugely popular 'Ganpat' number in Lakhia's Shootout At Lokhandwala, makes his appearance with 'Apun', almost taking off from where he left in the previous film. It is loud, and has visible elements of hip hop and reggae in it. The music of 'Mission Istanbul' is action packed, quite like the film itself. It is racy, pulsating, and its numbers should work well on the dance floors. Of the four music directors, newcomer Chirantan Bhatt seems to hold promise. But the true winner is the old war horse, Anu Malik. He seems to back in his groove these days, and his tryst with melody continues untarnished.
